The percentage is calculated from an amount, it is rounded to a percent, that just means you have less than a hundredth of what you could offer, it doesn't mean that there's nothing there.
As for the maximum offerable per item, as some people have already discovered it's 65535, and I bet anyone who is binary-savvy will know why.
That's not really what I was asking. I'm wondering how my nest (which I can't really pick up, it's a big pile of branches and stuff stuck in the tree branches) can have esteem stored in it, since it can't be offered. That's why I was asking about the esteem on it... unless storing esteem keeps it from decaying when the totem unbonds for some reason!

Well, obviously you can't offer your nest, since you can't pick it up... so I would suggest that you not waste esteem imbuing it, but that's just my feeling.
Why you would imbue something with esteem when you know you can't offer it is somewhat beyond me, but each to their own!
As for artifacts, etc. yes, they will come back, just with no esteem.

Yes, it is good. Most spawned Astral creatures are between 2000 and 3000 essence.
Because if it wasn't, you couldn't offer your pets! Duh!
