This page is quite large, be patient...

Aether charts

(I find it works best when you reduce the text size of your browser as far as possible).

Well, that was fun! I know there are gaps, but I have to go a long way to come back around, so I figure I'll do the nearer areas first. So this represents the aetherways near the Serenwilde dock (its the question mark in the strangely phallic formation in the centre). The aetherplex dock is also nearby (although I don't know why it recorded a 4 instead of a question mark... oops).

That was fun. smile.gif

Well, not sure how you would make a map... seriously, aetherspace is huge (if you haven't noticed).

I'm taking up your challenge!! weightlift.gif

I can't reduce font's size for that page.
And damn, it's huge.
Verithrax2006-02-07 15:46:57
For those of us who haven't travelled the Aether yet, what do the colours and characters mean?
Unknown2006-02-07 15:52:44
The question marks are docks at which ship crews can enter and leave a ship. The 'O' represents a vortex of power, which can be drained like astral nodes.

The places with X's in them are boundaries that cannot be passed. Everything else is a type of 'terrain' in the aether... for instance the white areas represent slip streams in which travel is faster than normal. The yellow areas (only a bit at the top right) are temporal storms that make travel a little more difficult and may drain power, although I'm not certain about that. Different sorts of terrain spawn different monsters.

Oh, and there are lots of black gaps where monsters were hiding the terrain underneath. They appear as exclamation marks (!), but as transients I didn't include them where possible.
Saran2006-02-07 15:53:17
White = Slip stream
Purple = Normal Aetherspace
Anything with a X = Unpassable
Anything with a O = Power Votex
Dark Yellowy = Temporal storms or something

Ah, interesting. I had started to map the aether also, yet I have not figured out a way to do it quite as you have. What did you use for this?
Unknown2006-02-07 15:56:45
I was at a loss of how to do it, so I wrote a module that fits into the modified version of Whytes mudbot program that will map automatically to html (because I couldn't think of any other universal format) for me. Spent all afternoon trying to work out my silly little bugs. Heh.
Soll2006-02-07 16:00:28
Ah, interesting. I could help map if you wanted to share it. wink.gif

Hehe, not just yet... let me revel in my short-lived success first. tongue.gif

This is completely awesome, I almost want to give you credits to finish the thing!

Almost.

But yeah, I do want to see the complete version, and I bet that if you submitted it for the website that you could win credits just the same as any other map. happy.gif
Estarra2006-02-07 17:33:26
Very impressive! clap_1.gif

(Do you have any idea how big the map would be if you keep mapping it like that though?)
Richter2006-02-07 18:00:07
I had the world map printed out once, it was something like five feet across. happy.gif I imagine the aetherspace map is going to be pretty huge as well.
Iraen2006-02-07 18:51:21
And here I was just going to splice screenshots together in Photoshop... ohmy.gif Very cool!

About 100 square feet. biggrin.gif

Haven't been to aetherspace yet, but is it comparable in size to the wilderness in Achaea, or much bigger? I did a wilderness map for Achaea, and at one pixel per room, is was already pretty big. Not sure if it fit on one sheet or not, since I didn't print it out, but it would have been most of the page if it wasn't on two pages. That's probably the best thing to do if you want a map that's managable size, and just use different colours for everything like you're already doing.

Exactly 1,000 characters wide. I haven't figured out how tall yet.

EDIT: And that's just for the aetherway space...

How did you figure that out? Isn't it possible that along the north-south axis there is a passage that lets you move farther east-west? Given the reactions of the Divine, and the wording in the files, I would have assumed bigger than 1,000. Though, I suppose for later expansions they could simply open up one of those passage ways.

Though, there are also all the other planes, so if each are 1,000x1,000, I guess that would fit into more what I was imagining the size of Aetherspace to be.

Aetherspace is circular, Lord Elcyrion explained why in character, though most of it went over Shorlen's head tongue.gif So, if you started at my zero coordinate (the aetherplex) went out and managed to reach (1000,0), you'd be at the aetherplex, having traveled around the multiverse.
