On the contrary, as a character feel free to judge other characters based on their city/commune/etc. The game has foundations set in ways different areas/affiliations are opposed to one another, fundamental things that are unable to be resolved, though other things have potential to be worked around. That's part of it.

As a player, remember that the others you encounter are players as well, and no better or worse for chosing to play what they are as we're all making up different parts of the same game. But as a character, don't feel obligated to bring in real-life concepts (i.e., if someone tells you viscanti are tainted and thus bad, don't feel the need to equate that to racism/segregation IRL and automatically oppose it). The area you're affiliated with has values and goals and certain stances on those of other areas for good reason. If you don't throw yourself into the role by accepting them as realistic, why bother playing?

Do yourself a big favour and read up on the histories, get the perspectives, and immerse yourself. smile.gif

Although you can create a character that isn't discriminatory, or a character that doesn't judge people like that. It's just not the norm.
And please, please don't bring that kind of thing OOC. Your character may hate the Taint, but that doesn't mean the Tainted players are bad. I know you're smarter than that, but I some people aren't.

I was going to argue this, but then I changed my mind... Didn't seem much point.

Those that agree probably want to have simle deliniated grounds for conflict, and those that wish to see a more complex interplay between the cultures, will already see this as being too simplistic.

There are various reasons, provided by the histories and the game mechanics, that one might chose to hate another organisation. It is up to your character to decide whether you feel these to be good reasons or not.

... unable to be resolved, though other things have potential to be worked around

I'm just getting an impression that perhaps I need to clarify a bit more about reasons for conflict and interaction (or lack thereof) between characters of different areas.

Things in-game which are "unable to be resolved" ... if your character focuses only on them that may indeed be a simpler route, though still challenging to play a character, from anywhere, who focuses primarily on their home and loyalties because, for many/most of us, IRL life and history says doing so is bad, narrow-minded, etc.

Things in-game which have "potential to be worked around" do allow for the "more complex interplay" but also, if taken too far and/or in combination with ignoring the "unable to be resolved" issues, can open the way for the game to lose something of its reality.

While the "why can't we all be friends" and the "but there's nothing wrong with --" mentalities are possible, too often I've seen it come about from the characters throwing aside the "unable to be resolved" differences between their areas of affiliation and opposing ones. Not pretty or fun for anyone. How can a character uphold beliefs and goals and remain loyal to their commune/city if they truly see nothing wrong with the beliefs and goals other other areas that are opposing those of their home? If there's nothing wrong with other things, there may also be little point in one's own.

If your character is something, let them be it. Yes, your character can choose to accept or reject perceptions and actions and whatever, but acknowledge the reality of the perceptions and actions and whatever even if rejecting them. If your character is rejecting something, make sure you the player know why he or she is doing so.

Go for the immersion while playing without letting yourself get in the way.

And Murphy, your argument is flawed.

I am tainted.
I am good.
Therefore not all Tainted players are bad. smile.gif
(please don't hurt me)

*points at murphy* yes, and stay away from him and his evil... taintedness ninja.gif
Cwin2006-02-16 17:38:18
No, no no

Murphy is tainted. (Tainted Magnagoran absolute)

Murphy is bad. (Self description)

Murphy is cool. (Applied coolness to slaughtering factor)

Thus

Bad is cool (A = B and C = B then A = C)

and

Taint is cool (A = B and C = B then A = C)

I mean.. what do you think made me want to try out Magnagora in the first place? pureevil.gif
Shorlen2006-02-16 17:53:27
Murphy is awesome, as are people from all cities/communes. Don't listen to people here, obviously - biased, they are. Don't listen to me either for that matter. Make up your own opinions tongue.gif
Murphy2006-02-16 23:04:30
Ahem.

There are some good, wholesome people in Magnagora, and there are others that are utter scum of the earth, kill you kick your cat and piss on your rug types.

Murphy is the latter to most of his enemies, bar some who show balls and skills

If your telling me to not listen to you, then that must mean that really I need to listen to you, otherwise making up my own mind would be listening to you telling me to not listen to you... I'm SO CONFUSED!

Shorlen means, don't listen to anyone, and do what you want (I think...)
