I want that.
I hope it comes out on a Mac

Firstly, Macs suck. I argue this with Roark regularly.
Anyway, I have also had my eye on this game for some time and I've been quite excited by its progress. Actually prompted me to write an emergent behaviour AI simulation a while back (which failed miserably as every base pattern I made ended up either flying to the defensive extreme or the aggressive extreme, so the whole thing just turned into a slaughterhouse).

That intro. Is beautiful.
Best part of the gameplay trailer is near the end, in the interstellar phase, when the guy was seeking out new life and showing an example of first contact with an alien race. I couldn't stop laughing at how awesome that was.

Dread to think what the system requirements will be, though :/

That's freakin' awesome. Might just be worth reformatting for.

Am I the only one that thinks it looks like too many different genres, all of them done poorly?
Lisaera2006-03-02 18:49:35
If you look at a game like Sid Meier's Pirates! you can see that a game comprised of many smaller games that may not necessarily have the depth of a game fully focused on that genre can still be extremely fun and successful.

And if you look at Black and White, you can see that a game comprised of many smaller games can also be very terrible, espite having an interesting premise. Remembering the crud that was B&W is all that's keeping me from being excited about the game.

If that video's a year old, either the game's coming out tomorrow, or it's vapourware That was like, 99% complete from the looks of it!
Manjanaia2006-03-02 19:06:21
Yeah I was thinking of Black and White as well... poor game. I think this is a great idea but I don't think it will turn out as well as you all think... to be honest it looked a bit clumsy, rather shallow and didn't really seem too much fun.
Oblivion ftw.
Oblivion ftw.
Daganev2006-03-02 19:06:31
I looked it up.. its from March 11th 2005. Atleast acordding to http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/03/11/ne...ws&subj=6120274
And your mistaken about the game being 90% done. Games, like movies are often made backwards, with visuals first and code last. This way they can sell the game to the investors before the hard part needs to get done.

I'm not sure about the stage of civilisation. With the whole lack of language and such, the spaceship coming out of nowhere, the bubbliness of the effects, the lack of visible intelligence in the creatures... I don't think it would achieve the gritty realism and power of sci-fi classics like Fragile Allegiance (if you haven't heard of it, you might as well go and slit your wrists. Remember down the road, not across the street)
- But the early parts of the game look amazing. I like the scope you'd have when designing your race, architecture etc. Just felt let down later on. It seemed like the preview was relying heavily on the stunning graphics in the later stages.

Dunno, the metagames at the end might be really interesting. It depends on how well they're done.

Actually that was more harmless than it looked, I just noticed the tag in your profile.

My best friend from college took a picture of our "macs are the best" friend using her computer to write a paper when his was on the fritz. We're currentally showing it to him whenever he makes remarks about computers.
Edit:That game looks pretty cool as well, The "city" scale reminds me of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, where I always went Gaia, and then ended up using those worms on my enemies.
Mind worms>>>all
ferlas2006-03-02 20:28:18
OOOh the game does look pretty interesting, the starting bit seems really fun and new the tribal and the city bit seems like a bit of a copy of the sim though, which was good just nothing original, it’ll still be fun though, the enemy cities seem a bit hard to defend against though if you want to make a peaceful city, I suppose that’s just part of the fun of the game though.
I agree with amaru though im not to keep on the spaceship just popping up out of now where, Id love it if you had to build it like that old sid mersomething civilizations space project part.
