Firefox Memory Leak

Well, it isn't really bothering my PC usage, but I was wondering (for those that use Firefox) if having numbers between 60,000k and 115,000k (The current) is normal for other users. The speed of things isn't bothering me since my PC is solid, in my opinion, but it was just a concern. I usually just Google stuff like this and don't bother checking with others, but just being nosey.

Maybe one of these days I'll just make a big tech thread since there isn't a lot of (said) issues on the forums.

Right now it's using about 32k for me.

60-115k does sound like a bit much.

Yeah, and I've only got four tabs open (And I had at least double that open earlier), but it's still around the 115k range.

With 4 tabs open, mine is running at 35k
Acrune2006-03-05 01:25:38
22k for me unsure.gif

Edit: Sending all 4 tabs to forums bumped it to 26k. Maybe you have some uber-site open?

Firefox leaks memory like... Something very leaky. If you leave it running for long enough, it'll fill up the availiable core. Either close it or use Opera. Using IE, of course, will fill your core with other things, such as viruses (Not virii).

EDIT: Firefox is using 10% of my availiable memory right now. That's quite a lot.

Visit the Mozilla forums - they have threads dedicated to discussing this very issue and how to fix it (mostly its due to either extensions or not configuring the way it tracks the forward/back tabs and their history.

Hmm. I'm at 35k with a single tab. 4 has me at 37, and 6 kicks it up to 45k. 115k seems rather insane. What sort of extensions are you running?

EDIT: 125k with 19 tabs open.
Asarnil2006-03-05 05:09:59
Firefox also records the history for each of those tabs so you can go back/forward. Try visiting 10-20 pages with each of the tabs and see what its like. Then when you close the tabs again it doesn't visibly free up the memory.

oh damn.. I've been having that problem for ages, but IE seems to be even worse for me... didn't know there was a fix...

Firefox for me can go between 90 - 300K easily.

I just wish that the Moox optimized firefox builds were being made still - then you would REALLY notice the difference. The general firefox builds are made with the x86 (at least from what I remember) architecture in mind while the Moox builds were optimised for the different processors so you could pick up your Pentium based firefox build or your AMD dual core build.

Well, I'm running Opera with one open tab and it takes almost 60M, similar amount Firefox used.
Like Asarnil said, it's a browsers' feature, they keep pages in memory so in case you return to them you don't have to load them again. The amount it's able to take might depend on the size of your memory (I don't really know, but makes sense).
I recall you can limit this with some settings option.

If that's really a leak you're suffering from, there's nothing you can do anyway. Except switching to Opera, I find it better.
Asarnil2006-03-05 17:03:33
Show me Opera with the ability to not only block ads but to on-the-spot block images like Lemonparty, Goatse and Ialie's sigs (sorry Ialie - had to there biggrin.gif) and I might think about switching eventually.

Edit: Not to mention the ability to update without downloading the entire thing again and again.
