The soul-stealing game of the year is almost here!
Go check out this google video. There's some other new cool things out there too, and The Elder Scrolls Website has been updated.
I'm so excited!

Umm... What the heck is Oblivion? Is it like the Baldur's Gate series?
Yrael2006-03-14 22:13:40
I'm afraid I'm going to have to eat your face at this point in time.

BLASPHEMY!
Only the next game in the series from Bethesda. The last one was just about THE best single player game ever made.

*falls over*
Oblivion is the fourth game in the Elder Scrolls series (though only Morrowind and Oblivion, the third and fourth installments, are incredibly noteworthy to me).
It is an immersive non-linear RPG, which takes place over sixteen square miles (think hours of walking, if you don't use the insta-travel feature). It has the best graphics of any RPG to date, a system where all (about) 1000 NPC's have their own daily routines, and can even improvise somewhat. You level things up by doing them more, you can create new spells by mixing old ones, most of the plants can be used for alchemy, and, and... I'd explode telling you everything.
Watch that first movie so you can go omfg what is that, and then go to the official website to learn more. I'd suggest viewing the six shortish movie chapters of the thingy explaining what all Oblivion is.

omg omg omg...
It's like if you combined Morrowind with the real world you'd get this game...
Now... just need to buy a new computer so I can run it.

In morrowind I usually took one of two paths.
I became a thief and took everything from everyone’s houses(only hard part was keeping 1 merchant you didn't steal from, so you could sell all the stolen good to them, so they wouldn't lay the smack down on you for selling them their own stuff), or I became a mage and picked herbs until there was no tomorrow.

Could anyone who has been following Oblivion closely possibly point me to where I find out what tools I will need to make mods and how I join projects?
I tried looking at thier forums and they are more disorganized than ours! (if thats even possible)
Thanks! (sorry for the inapropriate post, but I will make a 3D krokani one day, just you wait and see...)

The Elder Scrolls Construction Set, which is kind of what they used to make the original game, will be shipped with the PC version.
And they released snippets of the soundtrack as well, and it's available for download.

Ya, I downloaded one of those, the music is even better the Morrowind's.
Richter2006-03-14 22:31:49
And they have Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean! Patrick Stewart could be in anything and make it sound good. Someone have a link to that soundtrack site to put up? Elder Scrolls is blocked at work.

I have no desire to play Oblivion. Morrowind was one of the worst games I ever played - I just don't understand how anyone enjoyed it. The game was a series of errand quests where the goal was to go from point A to point B, and then maybe to point C. There were no choices in the game, no alternate routes to take the plot. The only bit of fun I squeezed out of that horrid game was figuring out new and interesting ways to break the game system to become absurdly overpowered. All in all, it was the biggest waste of time I sat through.
Picture an MMORPG with a mediocre combat system and a repetitive and boring quest system, where the only lure is the social interaction. Now, take away the social interaction. That is Morrowind.

I really have no idea where you got that impression from. If anything, I'd complain about Morrowind having TOO MUCH choice/lack of focus. There are tons and tons of side-quests and faction quests and stuff. Yes, there was only one way you could take the main plot (an alternate side to it would have been nice) but there's so many ways you can do everything... well, whatever.
I'm not saying Morrowind was without flaw, because it was very flawed at times, but I think it was still a worthwhile game to play. Oblivion looks like it's going to be like Morrowind but with most of the bad decisions the developers made corrected.

It's so sad, I already preordered my copy AND bought an Xbox 360 JUST so I could play Oblivion. Once I get it...oooo.......you might not see me for a couple days.
Richter2006-03-14 22:52:35
Morrowind wasn't without flaw, but the sheer amount of stuff you were able to do was amazing. There were choices upon choices everywhere. You can join various guilds: Dark Brotherhood, Morag Tong, Fighters, Mages, two religions, one of three dark elf houses, one of three vampires houses (if you went that route), and many other things.
So what if Morrowind only had one ending. Boo-hoo. Final Fantasy games are some of my favorite games of all time, and the only one that had alternate endings was a crime to humanity (I speak of FFX-s).
Words can't express how cool this game is going to be.

Game is reserved and paid off, including the strategy guide (I hate using them, but the Morrowind one alone was like an inch thick, this'll be larger probably).

Pssh.. FFX-2 was not bad! That's on par with the whole "I won't play KH because it has Disney!" stuff that I hear.
Anyway, I think I'm going to buy Oblivion after I buy my x1300 in a week or two (And maybe a GB of RAM since I multi-task too much on this PC). It looks nice and looks like a good waste of time (In a good way!).

Not to hijack completely, but I played about half of FFX-2. The music was horrible, the story was cheezy, and it was the worse sequel to a game I'd ever played.

Er.. what music were you listening to? It had the SAME areas (aside from a few new story additions) and music as FFX that I can remember other than the YRP music. Edit: Maybe I was wrong. Looking at soundtrack listings now.
The plot wasn't even that bad and I can think of worse sequels (Devil May Cry 2 being one of 'em). I think a lot of people just get stuck on the "Girl Power!" aspect of the game and brush it off. Like you said, you didn't even play it through.
But to stay on topic.. can someone explain the whole class thing in Oblivion?
Richter2006-03-14 23:48:58
FFX-2 was the only one not composed by Nobuo Uetmatsu.
And the class thing, if it follows Morrowind, works as such:
You start out, pick a class, and then it boosts certain skills in those areas. You can also custom class, to boost the skills you want. So, maybe as a paladin you'd be good in longsword and armour, or something, while bad in magic. Let's say you wanted a custom class, you could make a battlemage, put lots into longsword, lots into magic.
I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, that you can max out all your stats anyway, for everything, some just start higher than others depending on which class you chose.
