Depends on your race. I can get a good 6 reads from a curse scroll before quickening fades, you should be able to get 4-5 from being Merian with quickening up.

Ethelon was a really good fighter, his only weakness was that his curing couldn't deal with some affliction combinations, and that's hardly enough reason to be called mediocre, let alone bad.

3-4 reads. Races without any equ bonus, in my opinion, don't get anything really too beneficial from quickening. The first equilibrium gain after summoning it is too long.
