mmorpgs against boredom

Ok, so since Lucas arts managed to ruin SWG competely now I unsubscribed and went looking for other games.

I read a bunch of EQ, EQ2, WoW, city of villians, etc. And all claim good 'RP' values but I also know SWG claimed that and they only had one server and all the rest was leet speak and chatrooms on steroids.

I also am following development of Gods and Heroes, which should go to beta soon (their planned release is in fall), ofcourse the tricky part is getting into the beta if I plan to go that way. (well I know I'll absolutely go for STO but that's more then a year away)

So now I'm downloading EQ2's trial to see what it's like (since it's SOE and they have digital purchase options and has the same monthly fee as SWG). But the thing is the trial won't show me the real EQ2 world so I'll only be able to decide on graphics, gamemechanics, skills etc.

I'm wondering do any of you play a high graphical mmorpg, do they have a decent RP community and how is their development team (oddly enough the last is probably the most important).

Also don't mention Anarchy online around me because I thought it sucked. sad.gif

Call me cynical, but I highly doubt you will find any RP of quality in a MMORPG. The average age of the playerbase is too low, and the game's constraints really do not make for good RP opportunities. Shadowbane made the best attempt I have seen at a game where RP could happen, and then Wolfpack ruined it so horribly, I never want to think about that game again tongue.gif

If you are looking for RP above all else, I recommend finding a good local gaming group. If graphics are necessary, find a good local LARPing group. If you live in New England, US, there are plenty of both - I can't say much for certain outside of where I live though.

If you want a game with a good dev team, as far as I have seen, the best for MMORPGs is Blizzard. They aren't bastards, and they have made many amazingly intelligent design decisions with WoW. Of course, the playerbase leaves much to be desired... Personally, I like Arena Net better, but Guildwars isn't a MMORPG, just a fun little non-persistant game.

WoW's playerbase isn't to hot like you mentioned, and you are indeed cynical. I have found there accually quite a few teens that have great RP, you just need to find a place without scriptkiddies and leetspeak.

the server on SWG had great RP, I loved it. But then jedi became the norm and you would do an RP event where 100 jedi showed up in an event concerning the empire, so it sorta ruinds immersion

I don't have a good shedule to meet up with gamers. Since I work in weekends and nights and study in the afternoon. Also there is only 1 gaming org near me so not much choice in them.

Graphics are neccesary because I have IRE for textbased ones wink.gif , all sucking up asside though, sometimes it's just nice having a graphical game.

I play EQ2, and I'll start off by saying that RP does not exist in that game. None whatsoever. Not even on the RP server. Norrath's lore is a big bundle of mess. SoE also have the tendency to release expansions pre-maturely even though the content is clearly not ready for Live release. You also have to put up with the generic internet retards on the Live servers.

Therefore, if you were to get into EQ2, my reccommendation would be to join the Test Server (I play there). RP still won't exist there, but the community there is the best (A lot like this community, minus the annoying people who ruins your day). Internet retards can't exist on that server due to its low population (60-100 players on at any given time, I'd say), since they become shunned by the entire server very quickly. Many contested spawns are also available due to the low population. The only downside really is the lack of pick-up groups (a blessing and a curse) and the non-existant economy (we usually give things away). Once you join a guild though, you can pretty much regularly group with someone from your guild. Since you don't have to deal with retards, the game is a lot of fun on this server, especially after you get into a guild.

As Shorlen said, you won't find quality RP in any MMORPG. You may find a group of people who might practice it, but the immersion will quickly be ruined by internet retards.

hrm, well I suppose SWG wasn't to bad pre-NGE then. And SOE's tendecy to ruin things is well known, not to mention they have the worse support ever.

I do always enjoy TC servers, though they do get retard influxes when they have 'bluefrogs'. (anyone that ever played SWG pre-cu will know them)

I'll keep my RP hopes up for G&H then, maybe I'll play EQ just as FPS game with fancy chat. Does it atleast have nice quests and stuff?
Asarnil2006-04-07 01:21:21
Stick to text based for good RP. You really can't beat the RP of Shadows of Isildur. I am stuck between characters at the moment, but what I saw while I was there was awesome.
Saran2006-04-07 03:24:28
I'm sorry but it's purely because all the players seem to have this belief that an rp server is actually optional rp, regardless of whatever they agreed to when they started playing (WoW actually has it somewhere in the legalities)

EQ2 wasn't particularly entertaining to me. I pre-ordered it, having liked the original, and got bored, very quickly. WoW is great - I played up to level 60, on a pvp from 1.6 to patch 1.9, as a warlock, slowly being buffed from a gigantic neon sign visible only to rogues that screams "GANK ME NOW" to jesus on wheels, due to the fact that I had to work out how to fight while being completely useless with talents and skills. That got boring, too, but it took longer, mostly because I could slaughter other players constantly with no repurcussions - if I was good enough, which I was, but like every other MMORPG, it gets boring, but a lot slower than EQ2.

Especially when you're wearing all blues and greens and destroying 60 rogues stuffed full of epics without a pet. (Psst. That means 50% of your utility is gone as a warlock.) *daydreams* Anyway. Play WoW, pick a Warlock. Hard to learn to play, (even if it's easier now) but more rewarding and a lot more fun. Ditch EQ2 - it's like the original, a repetitive level grind, but prettier. At least in WoW you don't lose any exp.

All the reviews I have read have said that DnD online is quite amazing and is very similar to the taple top experience, ofcourse if you don't like the tabletop experience then you won't enjoy DnD online.

The people I've talked to have said DnD online was terrible, had horrible design, and a really stupid dev team. But then the people I talked to knew the dev team personally, and didn't like them, so...

Whoever suggested joining a gaming group has a decent idea. I recommend either Shadowrun or one of the White Wolf games, like World of Darkness or Mage.

Nooo, the best roleplay is to be found in sessions of D&D, Munchkin D20, and Paranoia!

I personally love homebrew systems above all others. The only established RP system I like is Nobilis, where the players are the immortal guardians of an underlying concept of reality (such as War or Passageways or Insanity or Distance or Fanboys), warding them from the Excrutions, beings from outside the Weirding Wall who wish to destroy all of existance. The system is diceless and how strong and capable your character is depends quite strongly on how creative you are.

The system also has some really fun concepts, such as Ghost Miracles and Worldwalking. Ghost Miracles are where you create a miracle not using your concept, but one that touches upon it. So, if you are the Nobilis of Chocolate, creating the aroma of chocolate would be a ghost miracle. Or if you are the Nobilis of Awkward Social Situations, making someone feel embarassed suddently without knowing why is a ghost miracle.

Worldwalking is a method of instantaneous travel through closely related ideas. You can "walk" from an object to a more generalized version of the object, or to a more specfic one. So, if you want to get to where someone is, you can walk from a chair to the set of all chairs, then from the set of all chairs to the set of all chairs that might are in a house, then from the set of all chairs that are in a house to the set of all objects that are in a house, then from the set of all objects that might be in a house to the set of all pants that are in a house, then from the set of all pants that are in a house to the set of all pants owned by Bob, then from the set of all pants owned by Bob to the pair of pants Bob was wearing an hour ago. This was done in a game I was watching, and freaked the heck out of the mortal that "Bob" (can't remember the character's name) was sleeping with dry.gif

And that was entirely off topic. :inno:

That's the long and short of it, 13 year olds cyber-fucking in the tram. Which is great, because I made another Warlock there and levelled him to be exactly the same as my other warlock, and started letting Infernals and Doomguards loose in the tram.

People do that in Lusternia too, your point? ninja.gif

The RP servers are still better than the non-RP servers. They have the same number of people I don't like, but more people that I do like, and some people who actually try to RP... I think. I ran into about three or four of them out of a hundred, and that's a better percentage than I expected.
Verithrax2006-04-20 05:03:03
You see, in Lusternia, we're good at it.
