The sad fact is that prevention education works little better than abstinence education. Teens are about as likely to practice safe sex with a limited number of partners as they are to remain completely abstinent. It's been only two years since I had to take the sex ed course at my public high school, and I can say that the course (prevention and protection style) wasn't able to visibly reach any of the students, and was just another boring class in the school day to goof off in.
What seems to always be the case is that the people who care aren't the ones affected. While it's nice to empathize for the less unfortunate, it's stupid to try and help them when they won't do anything to help themselves. I've pretty much just given up faith in my generation

My first course in it was something like fifth grade in elementary school... and that one really did visibly reach pretty much all of us, because we were all *very* uncomfortable with the discussion and going "ew!" at most of what was being said.
The high school course, on the other hand, was pretty much ignored by everyone.

People are as likely to have sex no matter what education you give them. They are more likely to be safe and secure if you educated them though.
I've never heard of abstinence actually being taught. It just doesn't happen over here.
It kind of happens here, think of all the priests running about going ack no! Be a virgin be a virgin! Condoms are evil! Using condoms sends you to hell!

Well, that's what I'm saying. So many people I know get drunk/high and have unprotected sex, have STD's from the pure quantity of sexual partners and a single slipup, lie to their partners, refuse to use protection, etc...
And condoms will be the doom of mankind. I hate the damn things.
It's my goal to one day eradicate them from the face of the Earth.

Don't have sex. If you have sex, you will get pregnant. And die. Just don't have sex.

Heh. My parents (who are catholic) used to drag me off to church on the RAF base every Sunday when I wasn't old enough to stay in the house on my own so I had to put up with a lot of that, but in school abstinence wasn't even mentioned as a freakin' option. I guess it was just assumed that those who don't want to don't want to and don't have to pay attention!
