I've been thinking about this idea for a while now, and I really think it would solve 2 big problems the game has.
- Lack of selection in effective weaponry for Guardians/non-Mystical Mages
- Lack of work for Artisans
Basically, my idea is to create a new set of items, Staffs, under the Artisan's skillset. Basically, they'd be like mage staffs, only crafted by an Artisan, instead of summoned, and without the pointing, shielding or healing powers. They could possibly be enchantable as well, but their real use would be to give low-circle mages and guardians another option for bashing, other than just Cosmicfire/Blast. Ornate staffs would also open another market for all those gems that powerstone cutting produces.
I think it'd work great. What do you guys think?

So mages and guardians would be beating things to death with a staff? I dunno how that'd work.
Narsrim2006-04-14 05:24:48
How about this:
Artisan creates staff, enchanter charges staff, can then bash with it... but it slowly loses charges. Wiccan should be able to use them too! Nature curse is as bad as blast/cosmic fire.

I don't know how well Blast and Nature curse are, in relation to each other, but they're both far better than cosmicfire. Ask any Nihilist, bashing is utter hell for us.
In our latest envoy we have some great suggestions for new offensive guardian skills, one for the Celestines and one for us. Hopefully they'll get looked at.

Eh, from what I've seen, Blast and Cosmicfire are pretty much the same, if not, Cosmicfire is slightly worse with the damage. Can't speak for the wiccans, though. But I like Narsrim's idea. It'll save the coders a need to implement stats, though I wonder about how the charging would work. I think an Energy Cube-like system would work. You could have as many charges as you want on it, recharge it 5 charges at a time, and I'm sure the enchanters would be relieved to not have another item that's a pain to enchant. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Greatrobes.
Simimi2006-04-14 06:18:12
Tested by me personally, they are NOT the same...
blast does infact > cosmicfire one a mob by mob basis as per the average weakness of mobs in bashingspots through the game.

What Guido said, Nokraenom's idea for guardians he submitted is much neater than some artisan staf for everyone.
Wiccan should be able to use them too! Nature curse is as bad as blast/cosmic fire.
What about the Moon one? Moonburst it's called?

actually, nature curse ~= blast ~= cosmic fire. They are all fairly even bashing wise.
Narses2006-04-14 08:22:46
Well, as someone who had the "pleasure" of bashing with all archtypes save wiccas, I must say that blast always took last casts to finish off whatever it was I was hunting.
However, one must also take into account that mages tend to choose a more intelligent race then others, and so their spells are affected by that.
The real difference between Cosmicfire and the rest is simple, it does not give way to a better spell. Nature curse is placed with either cudgel or moonburst/nightkiss while blast is replaced by staff.
Oh well, to each their own.

I like the staff with a certain number of charges idea. Useable by anyone, contains a certain number of point icestaff/point rockstaff charges. Hella expensive.

You know, i dont actually like this idea, having staves crafted by artisans is fine, having them enchantable, is also fine, having them enchantable with attacks, is not exactly the best idea.
Firstly, they would be only enchanted by elemental enchanters, Geomancers, Aquamancers, Pyromancers and Aeromancers, who in turn couldn't be rogue since they would need a connection to their plain, and i highly doubt that any of the guilds rp wise would be willing to sell basically a part of their plane, to other guilds.
Secondly, why do we need them? Every guild has a bashing ability, granted some a pretty bad, while others are awesome, but then, that's what envoys are for, i mean, if there's staves which can be used by basically anyone, why not a potion which lets the drinker moonburst/nightkiss? Granted anyone can use a weapon, though we do miss alot more then a warrior specialized in it which is what gives warriors the edge with them.
Ohh and why would artisans create them, i'm curious as to that, since artisan seems to be focused around creating furniture and small items like that, a staff would be more along the lines of a another jewelry abiltiy, higher then wands really.

Mages already have the chance to deal 2-3 types of damage, do we really need to give them a third way, when Gaurdians only have 1-2?
Acrune2006-04-14 13:09:33
Wait... so your basically proposing that everyone gets one of the best thing about being a mage? Even without the twirling, etc, that seems kind of wrong...
Unknown2006-04-14 15:47:48
I am all for giving artisans more power, but I am not a fan of this idea. I think Acrune and Tenqual summed it up perfectly, not everyone should have the ability to bash like a mage.
Unknown2006-04-14 15:48:53
I want staves without enchantments. Just so I can have a walking stick without learning craploads of aquamancy/geomancy.

Ok, scratch the whole Enchantable Blast idea. I revert to my earlier mindset. I just wanna see walking sticks, possibly enchantable along the lines of wands. I'd hate for this idea to be derailed because we got too overambitious.
Verithrax2006-04-14 16:53:07
What about this: Artisans can make staves which can be enchanted. They hold about 5000 charges and take 1 Power per 1000 charges. Mages and druids can use them as a common staff/cudgel that doesn't have to be summoned, and damage from Pollute/Maelstrom/fury depends on how many charges it has when you break it. Wiccans and Guardians can use it to channel this or that and cause additional magic damage. Using a staff as a Wiccan or Guardian would take balance, not equilibrium, to make all those faeling and furrikin wiccans happy bashers (Since their health is so low).
Tekora2006-04-14 17:04:02
No, no, thrice I say, No! No charges. No maelstrom. That's going against the whole point of the thing, and that's what's pissing off the mages. The main point of it is to give more work to Artisans. I've been walking around for 5 years now with nothing wielded but a set of PRAYER BEADS because Mages/Guardians can't use weapons effectively. The only way they can is if they put poison on them. And even then, they're only slightly useful in battle and still useless in bashing. Now, if Nokraenom's put in an Envoy report that buffs Guardian bashing skills, then we only have to focus on the Artisan half of the purpose. And so, that's what I'm gonna focus on.
Verithrax2006-04-14 18:38:05
Er, no. What pisses off mages is the idea of mages and guardians getting staffcast. That's just wrong. But okay, staffs for bashing people in the head, sure. I just think it would be fun if Artisans could make custom staffs for us.

Yea it seems a bit iffy, think of like a celestine with great afflicting power with the additional damage of a staff, Dosnt seem right at all.
