I want to meet the marketing director at Nintendo so I can learn from him... pure brillance.
I suspect they get 50% more sales from this new name.

Seems odd at first, but catchy.
Daganev2006-04-27 19:26:26
The more people complain about the name, the more systems they will sell.

Picture the scene.
Hull City Centre.
Game.
"Can I have a Wee please?"
*gets battered*

Not really a fan of the new name. They compare it to google and yahoo in terms of original unfamiliarity, however, those are real words: google being 1 with 100 0's, and yahoo being an expression of excitement. They should have named it the Nintendo Woot.
Daganev2006-04-27 21:41:18
e-bay comes to mind... I have afeeling it was a typo
Aluminum was also a typo, and look how it stuck!

We or whee is a word though

However, wii isn't.
Acrune2006-04-27 23:43:22
Got me there
Tekora2006-04-29 06:27:46
Best console name ever. I can't wait until it comes out. It'll provide me and my friends with many hours of juvenile double entendre.
Then when we get over our sh*ts and giggles, we'll have fun playing with our Wii.

I really don't like it. Sure, it's original (or whatever) and going to stick in my head, but if it sticks in my head as a negative thing because it's a dumb-sounding name is there really any point?
EDIT: "I think people have to look back and let it settle in," she said. "I'm sure people felt the same way when Google was named – or the iPod. Napster. Yahoo. There's a whole host of unusual names that have become a part of everyday conversation and I think they're viewed now as unique."
If intelligent people are going to support that this is true, though, since I wasn't paying attention at the time, then I suppose I'll concede. Yahoo seems like a dumb name to me too but it's become rather like a word in the English language now, so I don't really question it. Seems like Nintendo are reaching pretty high if they want to push it into that league of recognition though, given their previous track record compared to Sony and MS.

I have to agree with him here though. I hated the names N64, Gamecube, XBOX, XBOX 360, etc when I first heard them, but they've grown on me. Though I dunno about Wii....

Didn't they claim some of it was a reference to the controllers or something
Perhaps the 'ii' part represents the controllers or something? *kinda imagines adds there the two controllers morph into the name*
I'm a lil' iffish about the name, but I have to say that if you actually name something with a proper english word the likelyhood that some obsucre product is already called it raises quite high.
I need to actually get the motivation to check if something has already come out called the "revolution" because that may be the reason behind the change, but you would think it would have been changed earlier

The unusual spelling is meant to symbolize both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

It was a marketing stunt, pure and simple. I happen to think the name is a bit dumb, but the fact is the amount of publicity they've garnered from this exceeds anything they could have ever bought with banners, ads, TV spots, magazine reviews, anything.
How many more people do you think are talking about the Wii than were talking about the Revolution just a few days ago?

The reference to the controllers probably comes from WI-Fi. It's Wii-reless.
Saran2006-04-29 16:22:39
Wouldn't that mean it's said 'Why' as in Why would you do such a thing as a opposed to 'Whee' as in Whee such an odd decision?
Estarra2006-04-29 17:45:03
It is my understanding that the big promotional gimmick of Wii will be the one-handed controller more than the name. I had thought it would be something cool that you'd move through the air and swing like a sword, but from the picture in the article I guess not.
EDIT: Ah, I actually read the article and followed the link. The controller will be motion sensitive! That'd be the reason to buy it, not the silly name.
