I also get annoyed that in order to be a good combatant you must either memorize hundreds of cures and have a wpm of above 150, or be an expert in whatever MUD client system you are using. Yes, what people here are saying is true. You don't need to be an expert programmer to create a decent system that will usually keep you alive for a while. But if you want to reach the upper echelons of combat, yes its going to be much harder without those OOC skills. Just remember it probably isn't impossible, and there is no reason that this setup should change. Part of what makes Lusternian combat so interesting is its complexity and speed.

Again, there is a new conflict system planned for release soon, and hopefully it is going to be significantly different from regular combat as it currently is. I'm hoping that aethership combat with the specializations will rely more on team coordination and strategy than intricate trigger patterns and automated responses. I'm also hoping that it will be somewhat more equitable for many players, with individual level, class and equipment less important than the ability to work well in a team, as the type of ship is a greater factor in success than the health or race of the individuals on board. (Excluding ramming situations, of course tongue.gif).

But yes, I'm really looking forward to this brilliant new system being finished. Hopefully we can past these envoy reports soon, and light up the aether with cannon fire! biggrin.gif

Edit: 'Armies' in my opinion would work far, far better as NPC ships in this system than NPC individuals in regular combat. There are just too many problems with that.

I don't think you really need to be an expert in anything to become pretty decent in combat, I mean im not really that amazing but I do alright, I can't code really but Im not inept at it so I can look at a system and tweak it slightly, I doubt I'd be able to code a full system myself without a lot of time and effort that I really don't want to spend. Transing skills isn't to bad, in game I have about 10 trans skills now and I think I have only purchased 1200 credits which is about enough to trans 4 or five skills so I've transed like five or six in game soon to be more.

Then you can look at people like aesyra and kaervas who havn't bought many credits at all are near or are omni trans with mostly in game actions and then look at torak who I don't think has bought any credits at all or almost none anyway and hes champion in his guild.

Being a champion does not necessary mean a person is one of the best fighters. It can simply mean there are no really good combatants in the guild, or they don't want to take the job.

Torak, particularly, is Good, even though he lacks many quite important skills and has no artifacts.

avaer what you are saying here is pretty pathetic, you complain that people cant become the very best without putting in effort? what the hell do you expect? just to be able to login and zap everything? of course you have to put some damn time and effort into learning if you want to be good, its your choice, dont complain about it because your not willing to
Shamarah2006-05-12 10:18:46
It doesn't seem like there's going to be any actual point to aethership combat anyway.

Well, I debated whether this was worth replying to, but perhaps my post wasn't clear. I shall try to make the same points but in single sentence paragraphs.

---------

The reliance of combat on OOC coding/client skills sometimes annoys me.

However, I think you just have to accept this.

Why? The same complexity that requires trigger systems is what makes Lusternian combat exciting for a lot of people.

I hope aethership combat will be a challenging and interesting alternative that is unique compared to what we've experienced in IRE.

---------

Sorry to disappoint you, Silimaur, but my post wasn't a complaint. Nor was I asking to 'log in and zap everything' (and I must have really confused you to get that interpretation out of what I wrote). I think you are naive if you believe that everyone who plays Lusternia has the same difficulty in constructing an advanced healing and combat system, but just to be safe, I'll reiterate I don't expect nor am I asking for this to change.

If you feel the urge rising to throw around insults and denigration again, I'd gently like to remind you that the Idiots section of the forum is just a few clicks away. No doubt such valuable contributions will be far more at home over there.

I know I've said this before, but I'm hoping that the incentive will arrive at the same time the specializations do. smile.gif
