Today I fought Mederrach. He used the Barrier ability in Telekinesis so I was stuck in one room. (Yes, I could have used a disruption scroll, but I didn't have one at the time). Anyway, we're stuck in one room and chasm begins. I was told that levitation protects against it - apparently not. How can I prevent myself from being chasmed, other than running (which I couldn't do in this instance?
Edit: Wow.. I said "What do do" instead of "What to do"

If you have telepathy, force him to do something. Lover's effect (which I don't think you can do) and one other affliction I can't remember also works, and you can gust yourself out of barrier with a ring or by using anatine IIRC.
EDIT: Fixed the topic title for you too, since you mentioned it.

Other than disruption... what about flying or climbing into trees? Does barrier work at all elevations?
There's always heartstop.

Flying also works to an extent, although that could be suicidal since you're going to be dragged back down and pwned by tremors/lodestone and still maybe chasmed unless you timed it really well and got lucky with the demesne timer.
You'll still be barriered, but if the chasm effect resolves and you're on a different elevation I'm pretty sure it fails.
EDIT: Disruption is kind of an exercise in futility since it's blocked by deafness, unless they changed that recently.

It's also possible that it can require multiple readings to unlock the channel you want, right?

I checked another old thread and apparently if you're in the same room, it will still go off.
I'm a telekinetic aquamancer, so I can't force anything. Will paralysis work for it?

Love, peace and sleep have previously been mentioned as afflictions that stop chasm, if that helps.
Edit: Although the thread that mentioned sleep debated whether it worked or not, so maybe that isn't too reliable.

One word... actually three:
Gust
Burrow
Fly

Sleep never stopped it before...

Couldn't a telekinetic also fling the target?
Forren2006-05-11 05:34:36
That's actually what I thought of after the fight. Will have to test that though.
Shiri2006-05-11 05:42:27
I suggested that a while ago, but I seem to recall Geb saying it wouldn't work for one reason or another.

Why does gust work through barrier? It doesn't make much sense, does it.

It does.
1. Mage is standing, focused on upkeeping the barrier.
2. Other person gusts at him.
3. Mage is blown away (not out of the room yet), so he cannot focus on the barrier anymore - trying doing so in midair. Hence the barrier disappears and the mage is blown out.
Same with tackle. Unless they put in icewalls.

yeh pretty much use gust.
Barrier/chasm is a bad idea, however it takes 10p to put it up so...once you see a barrier go up start gusting them as much as you can and you'll have plenty of time.
Sleep never stopped chasm before.

Fling is a bad idea because unless you time it perfectly they'll fall back down into the room and the chasm will still go through.
Gusting yourself or them is the best option.

Yet falling asleep doesn't break his focus? Right.
Besides, I meant gusting yourself out.

Too bad you aren't a necromancer.
Diamante2006-05-11 15:22:01
mmm yes, lets not EVEN try to argue ways to make barrier chasm better :/
