I always think about applying when it comes around, but never seem quite able to convince myself to just turn in the app - Mainly because it always seems to come about as I'm going through an issue that limits my game-time to the point I think I wouldn't be much help.
Always had the same problem. Or IF I apply, then I am not around for the next two weeks or so, making me seem like a somewhat bad choice, too.
Iridiel2006-05-18 09:22:17
Also, being on timezones where usually there's no guides around helps, as those are the slots taht needs more filling (from what I know).
Saran2006-05-18 09:37:00
well I guess I didn't get it this time round.

Don't think about guiding as customer support.
Think primary school teaching, and you're the one who gets all the drooling crybabies who are fed up about mommy being out of sight. That's the first half. For the other half, think pimple-ridden teenagers at the worst stage of puberty (euh?) trying to be a nuisance for the sake of it at all costs. (For the third half, think of hardcore WoW and Evercrack players who've by now slipped into the kind of mental processes common in their natural habitat.)
There, that's guiding for you. For that, you're paid 4-5 credits per hour and get to play a guide character who sits around a lot, does nothing a lot, has to deal with newbies trying to hit on you (if you're Skein), and has to be the spoilsport because no, Helld00m is not an appropriate name, thank you.
In other words, being a guide is great fun
What was my point again? Uuuh... right. Being a guide is either quite boring or quite irritating at most times. Also, personally I consider it quite different from "normal" customer support I've done so far. What with the sitting around as an avatar and people trying to chat you up and all that. That said, being a guide can be fun and rewarding if it really is your can of beans. (Which it probably is if you're working as customer support 8 hours for a living and then you chill out by playing a game as customer support? )

You know you have pretty much described what its like to work as a customer service advisor, only reply school kids with cranky old people. Same thing in the end

Don't forget arrogant rich people, and people from other countries who like to barter. I don't barter.
Shric2006-05-18 14:40:54
I think that it would be alright as long as there aren't any smart-ass older people who should know better and little kids who don't know what they're doing.
Acrune2006-05-18 14:44:07
Yah, good luck with that.
Unknown2006-05-18 20:34:47
well, I guess you have a point. I know I can be quite cranky if I have to deal with a useless customer support person. (Not like it's them to blame, mind.)
And then, I haven't really done much customer support, I mainly do tech support. So mostly I am busy wondering what they broke this time around. (And people are usually desperate enough to actually be pretty nice )
Or maybe it's just because I'm German and we're just a that much more friendly lot than you berserking Brits and Americans.
Can't do much bartering if your IE spazzed up, either. Though, I do think I heard someone mumble a prayer one time. Or maybe some kind of elaborate malediction, who knows. (We couldn't fix the problem, probably that's why)

Haven't Germans tried to take over the world at least 3 times?

Ugh becomming a guide... I was an undersec for 4 months... First 3 I loved helping people, then 3rd month ended and BANG I hated novices
I like helping the novices, but they always refuse help!
That's more annoying(expesially when they ask for help doing something and they refuse it when offered, oi) than dealing with novices that have no idea what they're talking about in my opinion
Richter2006-05-18 23:30:26
Now that I think about it, I once posted a log where I argued with a guide because they were being a goober. That probably doesn't help my chances.
Acrune2006-05-19 02:04:59
Thats something one might forget until being reminded about it
Alger2006-05-19 05:21:15
Spindle needs to change its name.
Iridiel2006-05-19 09:43:37
I must say, i've had less problems with novices than I suffered in real life talking with theoretically professional customers or providers.
Nymerya2006-05-22 13:37:53
Guiding is like stabbing yourself in the face with a rusted butter knife repeatedly. Then there's the time people make alts just to cybersex others, or make alts just offensive names to spam the guides with pages, and pages of filth, and racial propaganda. Not to mention the time someone sent me the contents of a well known S&M novel...
Oh how muh fun Achaea is.

You obviously didn't have my primary school teachers . If guides treated newbies as some of my teachers treated me I don't think Lusternia would be around for too long. Heh.
