Paranoia Agent is all kinds of cool, though, but I don't think it's very newbie-friendly either. One thing you probably have to get used to in anime like that compared to Western TV is that it's a lot more heavily metaphorical, and Paranoia Agent is all over the place in that regard.
Like I said, really weird, but still good. About half way through the series it gets really confusing and weird (i.e. they seem to get a little off-topic, but it all ties together in the end). It's also only 13 episodes long.
Veonira2006-05-30 04:44:38
I loved Paranoia Agent.
Especially that one part with the train. My brother (who also watches anime) walked in just as I got to that part and was totally confused. And I would consider him to be about 20 times more controversial and deranged than the majority of people on lusternia and even -he- was weirded out by it .

People, I think we are getting a bit too far away here. This is not a "your favourite anime" thread, this is a "help an anime noob pick up the one which will make him change his opinion" one.
That being said, if I were a person who finds anime silly, watching Full Metal Alchemist (even though it's probably the best anime I've ever seen) as hell wouldn't change my opinion. Same with Hellsing. Or Bleach.
Shamarah, go for movies. If you like things to be gritty and realistic, get Jin Roh (as proposed by Kashim, who I believe had a Jin Roh avatar some time ago), AKA Wolf's Brigade. If you don't, watch Princess Mononoke. Or even better, watch both.

I think you're right -apart- from that FMA wouldn't change your mind. I think it would have gotten me watching anime a lot earlier if I'd seen that first instead of InuYasha. (Which is kinda bad.)

Nope. If I considered anime to be silly, there are at least 5 situations in the first episode ALONE to assure me in that statement. I can give you a list if you want.

I'm not sure if it would change one's mind or not, but the style is certainly is representative of much anime.
If you want something without silly elements, I strongly recommend RahXephon, Mushishi, Princess Mononoke, Trust and Betrayal, Hoshi no Koe, and Haibane Renmei.

Hmm, I guess that's true. It gets better after the second episode, but there are still plenty of silly elements in the series.

I think I can pinpoint the moment that turned me off anime forever: seeing two naked lesbians turn into motorbokes.
Unknown2006-05-30 05:25:48
Don't judge the whole anime on one series. Anime is such a broad term as normal, non-cartoony movies are.
That being said, you could get worse. Don't get me started on Ninja "a contest on making perverted/disgusting villans" Scroll.

Ya, I have no idea wtf anime you're talking about, but it's kind of like comparing...hmm...Sex and the City to Porridge.

No no, tarring with a single brush and all that. Everyone knows all anime is the same .
..Heh really I just wanted to mention the lesbian motorbikes. I don't mind some anime. I watched 'Spirited Away' and 'Howl's Moving Castle' for the first times a few weeks ago.
Veonira2006-05-30 05:54:35
Here's an anime you shouldn't watch:
Bastard
Hello soft-core hentai that I didn't REALIZE IT WAS.
*cries*

In that case, I have the moral right to describe the whole cast of Ninja Scroll. Including a woman who controls snakes and can, ahem, produce new ones. Via the vagina.
Seriously, unless you are twisted, do not watch Ninja Scroll. At least not the movie (do not know if they have a series). There are like 2 rape attempts in a 2-hour long film, and 2-3 other non-rape sex scenes.

Now that I have to see.

Yep, there's a series, and yes, there are a couple of rape scenes. I don't recall a vaginal snake woman in the series... but there is one who produces little mouth monsters via her entire body. OOh, there's also this woman who can disembowl anything and attach their limbs to herself. She's rather... out of it. Like most anime, it has a moral.
As for another anime that should be easy to find, Spiral. It has it's silly, and super-deformed, moments. Yet it's still a good show non-the-less. It's a show that focuses, not on violence and rad fighting scenes, but more on wit and the will to survive. The closest thing I can think of is Sherlock Holmes but definatly different. plus, it's not on going, I believe it only has Six DVDs in the entire series.
Edit: Took out what little spoiler I had to Ninja Scroll.

Yes, there are some adult-oriented anime (which Ninja Scroll just happens to be..surprise!), just as there are some adult-oriented movies. What's your point here? I'm sure you have seen much worse things in R-rated American movies. As this thread has been started by Shamarah to ask for people that like anime to suggest good ones for him to watch I honestly don't see why you're constantly trying to bash it.

He's suggested good ones, just trying to emphasise that this is a whole different kind of thing, I figured.

Sheesh, someone's being in an argumentative mood today.
Yes, I gave this as an example of anime not to watch if you are an anime-noob, which was no more off-topic than, for example, Laneth's post. Or yours before, for that matter.
By the way, I consider adult-oriented movies to be aimed actually at adolescent boys, who somehow think they will be more "macho" if they look at movies filled with sex or random violence. But I digress, as this this not the topic.
On second thought, Jin Roh might not be that easy to find. I suggest Ghost in the Shell in its place then. Especially the movies. Especially the second one.

I don't think the movies are very newbie-friendly. I tried to watch GITS: Innocence (without having watched the series or SAC) and it didn't make any sense to me at all.

You could always watch Raezon's favourite. That being Hamtaro, of course.
And, I must admit surprise to no one mentioning Bleach...it's as, or nearly as popular as Naruto is, in most circles. Fruits Basket is also great, but it's not generally aimed to be watched by males. It's fairly cutesy, with more pastel colours than most people are used to dealing with, but it was worth it.
Also, Howl's moving castle, the movie, aside from being made by Miyazaki, had the saving grace of being able to see Howl's butt. As wonderfully written as it might be, it just cannot provide as vivid a visual as that.
Hamtaro IS Miyazaki. Can't you people *see*? ARE YOU BLIND?!
Oh, and Bleach is good, except for the bountou crap that's going on at the moment. It might be pretty, but they've basically given everyone's power a step back, bastardized vampires and turned Ishida into an emo kid.
Vix2006-05-30 16:56:04
...There is no way the people in Bleach are 15.
That is all.
That is all.
