First impressions are everything... In the real world, it's done by looks, but here, it's done by name and title. I understand that this is just how the system functions, and to some degree it's necessary... but I really don't think I should be getting mistaken for a frigging faeling all the time. And especially by commune members, and especially those I've had extended interactions with (dammit, Valarien.) You'd think that the seven foot-tall hulking bear-thing would be hard to miss.
I'd propose some sort of command to put one's name aside for the sake of first appearances, exchanging one's name and title for something far, far more generic. For example, instead of,
Thul, the Silenced Speaker is here.
you'd get
A brambly tae'dae warrior is here.
For the sake of brevity, and to allow easier differentiation between people, I'd recommend a single adjective preceeding one's race, chosen by the player... for example, Thul would be "brambly," but a citizen of Magnagora might be "rotting," "craggy," or the ever-popular "tainted."
As this is intended mainly for RP use, I'd say that the mask should drop when hostile action is taken by or against the target. I don't know much about Illusions, but I don't think a skill to hide one's true race would be completely out of the question.
Anyway... go ahead and shoot this thing down, now.

I understand where you're coming from but.... I dunno. It would be a humongus change. Not very good for combatants.
Everiine2006-06-04 21:09:37
How about, instead of "Serenguard Everiine Silverwolf, Eagle Hunter is here" or "A winged Trill is here", you combine the two, like "Everiine, a winged Trill is here". It always drives me nuts when the lines at the bottom of a room description are 8 lines long, when only 3 people are there, because everyone's got long titles. Combine the race and just your name, it would be shorter.
Acrune2006-06-04 21:26:28
I like that idea, actually. And I'm not usually a fan of ideas.
Veonira2006-06-04 21:41:44
While it sounds like a good idea, I agree that this would just not work in Lusternia. I've seen this in some of the really intense roleplaying MUDs, and I never really liked it to be honest.
Although maybe what Everiine suggested would be nice, I wouldn't mind that actually. I just think the name definitely should be listed.

Yeah, there was one game I played (for a few hours) that you had to introduce yourself to others, then you would be able to see their name, instead of their race and gender. But when you died, you forgot everyone you've ever met, including who killed you and what lead up to your death. Very boring and kind of lacking the person to person interaction that I like with IRE.
Ialie2006-06-04 22:27:02
That.. what Everiine said would be wonderful! Extremely wonderful! I think it would make races more noticiable for rp things.
Everiine2006-06-04 23:13:34
Holy cow, someone actually liked an idea I helped come up with? I may have to throw a party or something!

Great feature in RPI MUDs, but too restrictive for a commercial MUD with a casual playerbase. Been suggested and either turned down or ignored in the past.

How is Everiine's idea restrictive?

It isn't He probably just read the first post.

Was talking to Thul. As for the other suggestion, I like it - it could, essentially, be an extension of the current pose system that carries over as you move. Could be difficult to set up so it looks right, though, and it's another thing to be monitered for abuse.
"Kahazul is here, KILLING YOU!"
"Kahazul is here, KILLING YOU!"

Not sure why it would need to be monitored when someone could just emote the same thing over and over again.
Daganev2006-06-05 00:34:08
This was something I had suggested to another unamed mud soon to be made.
Get rid of titles while doing says, leave them for HONOURS only, and instead when someone speaks it would read:
Daganev, the once tae'dae, once krokani human says "blah"
Ok just kidding, it would read, Daganev, the Human says, "blah"

/approve Everiine's idea
Thul2006-06-05 02:14:07
I do like Everiine's idea as well, and it's far, far more likely to ever see the light of day than mine. It'd certainly help alleviate the 'well, I know your name, rank, family, and personal achievements just from seeing you walk into the room, but I missed the fact that you're a huge frigging bear' problem, but without inflicting any terrible inconvenience to the all-important battle system.
I really don't see a reason why someone should be able to know all that stuff on mere sight, though. If it's a combat issue, it really shouldn't be hard to let players be targeted by the name of their race. With some people, this'd be an improvement, really (hello there, Flacarealah.) And like I said, the mask should drop after hostile action, if it's really a problem. Otherwise, well, maybe WHO HERE would get some more use.
The way I envisioned it working would be that you show up as "A/An (single-word adjective of your choice here) (race)" For example, "A pale trill says, 'Blah.'" This would limit stupidity while allowing for customization. Certainly, wandering around as "an absolutelyfantasticandwonderfulsilverwingeddeadsexy faeling" would be grounds for chastisement or lightning bolt. Certainly, it'd have to be watched, but... well, we're a mature bunch, for the most part. I'd like to think we can be trusted with this sort of thing.
By the way, am I doing something wrong here? Is Lusternia not meant to be roleplay-intensive? I wasn't aware, and someone needs to tell the rest of my forest while they're at it...

Lusternia encourages roleplaying, however it's not roleplaying intensive. Obviously you aren't allowed to walk around chatting about OOC things, but no one forces you to seriously roleplay anything.
From everything I've heard, Imperian is the most roleplaying intensive MUD that comes from IRE.

Tsuki2006-06-05 03:12:40
I think of Lusternia as roleplay-immersive, rather than roleplay-intensive. Similar ideas, but when you're immersed, you realize you don't need to talk about it as much because you're living it.
Back on topic, though ... Everiine's idea is interesting. But the basis for why, that people are mistaking you as one race instead of bothering to look at you before commenting, is really the silliness of the people involved. If you're going to add race for the convenience of those who are too lazy to bother looking, might as well add gender, too.

Heh, if you're going to add gender might as well add it to aetherwaves.
(Serenwilde): Vix, the female elfen, says, "Believe it or not someone has actually mistaken me for a guy before, even with a name like this."
Kidding. Too many commas.

Prefixing the city rank would be nice on the aethers. So when Earl Acrune says something, I don't get any "yes maams" or newbies mistaking me for a nobody
