Okay. I am a fan of Babylon 5. I am not ashamed. The series was one of my little high points during my teen days. I remember staying up late to catch my weekly dose. I even began taping episodes (Ah the days of VHS) so that if that were any particular episode I liked, I could watch it again. And I did, on many episodes. The show took me to a fantastic universe but more importantly I was enthralled by the depth and diversity of the characters in the story. Babylon 5 taught me to appreciate sci-fi drama series and showed me what potentially sci-fis can show you. When Babylon 5 was over, well, there was a void. But you move on.
I didn’t realized the void was still there until a few years ago (3?, 4?), had a saturday off, it was late, couldn't sleep, so I was up changing channels on the TV. I stumbled to a show that was just starting. Its theme song was playing, a western type song if I remember with a 'wanderer' feel to it. But somehow, I had the feeling I had just found something special. So I began to watch the first episode of a show called 'Firefly'. And I tried my best to catch each episode since. (Though I did miss a few and one of them was ... the last episode of the show... didn't know it was the last episode at the time )
Rough Overview: Humanity's original solar system finally collapsed. A mass exodus began and a new system was found. Planets were teraformed and colonized. All fell under a centralized authority call 'The Alliance'. Eventually however colony planets, particularly in the fringes, developed self identities and desired independence. This sparked a war, where The Alliance proceeded to give the independence rebels a sound whooping. The hero of the story was a volunteer in the independence movement but after his cause was lost, he faded into the social fringes. He became a captain of a ship called "Serenity" and took on jobs of the shady sort - smuggling, heisting ect. His crew, though all different in themselves, have one thing in common in that they really have no place to go. So they all kept moving.
I really am not sure what is about Firefly that caught me. Maybe it was wit in the script. Or how they inject quick humour in the right times from characters who really have sad stories to tell. Maybe it was the weird mix Firefly was made off - sci-fi meets western with asian culture influence thrown in. I remember the crew going to a western salon where there were chinese/japanese characters written about, in signs ect. I remember the crew moving through a western type town, walked through a crowd who was standing and watching a live chinese opera being played. The Companion character though usually wearing her corset dress number would on rare occasion wear something like an indian sari. I liked it whenever the crew while talking would sometimes switch to a weird chinese/japanese/korean dialect in expressing themselves, especially when highly stressed. (Hey if you have to curse and swear, might as well do it in a foreign language. ) But I think why I really fell for Firefly was because of its characters. How the writers write it out and actors acted it out, the crew's relationship towards each other. You can appreciate the character development that was intended.
And so while I was getting comfy being immerse in the series... Firefly ended. I can't believe how short the series was. (8 episodes? 12? 14? Am fuzzy) Later I did a little research in the net and got the jist of what happened. Firefly didn't got much support from the network, got shifted to the graveyard timeslots, and special events kept disrupting the show's weekly telecast. So, as it couldn't help but get small ratings, Firefly died. It is a waste really. The series had a lot of promise. You can't help but be curious where the writers intended the story and its characters to go. *begins clutching his hair*
So I had the void again, but you move on. So now, years latter, I was just looking for a movie to rent in the video store (it's fitting that it happen on a saturday), came across a vcd titled 'Serenity'. "Eh? This sounds familiar." I pulled out the vcd, saw the cover in front, read the synopsis in the back, and smiled. Maybe the void can be filled one more time.

All I can say after watching is, thank you. Everyone involved in making the movie did the fans of Firefly a great service. Even if some fans more hardcore then me may take issue of what happened to some of the series' characters in the movie. Even if the movie ends with the ringing question, "Now what will happen next to the crew?" *hands begin twitching to clutch his hair* All I can say is thank you.
I am looking over the vcd cover right now, and noted that the movie was made in 2005, last year. So I am wondering (and hoping) -
Did the movie Serenity garner enough interest in the states that Firefly could possibly be picked up and be continued???
(*laughs* I really need to stop falling for stories that does not have a complete ending. Will grow bald *knock on wood* from clutching my hair all the time. )
Hey, wait, wait, wait. I just realized. I have been woozy and all praise for Serenity the movie because I am a fan of Firefly the series. Hmmm. I need to step back and be objective. Don't want to raise expectations too high. Have to be responsible. *nod self* Hmmm... Hmmm.. The script of the movie was cleverly written. The director did a wonderful job in telling the story. The actors played their roles well. Though the movie does a good job in its flow of getting new viewers unfamiliar to Firefly up to speed with Serenity's universe, you would probably need to play intuitive to feel out the relationship undercurrents between the crewmembers, particularly between the Captain and the Companion, the Mechanic and the Doctor, and the First Mate and the Pilot, all of whom had their backstory in the series. ...So.... Yes, Serenity is a good, I think I can say very good, sci-fi movie.
(*chuckle* just remembered the story with the Pilot and the toy dinosaurs he puts around his control panel. *smiles and sighs*)
Woah. Just checked what I have written and realized this - I, am, such, a, geek. Anyway, Weeeeeee!

From what I heard, Serenity completely flopped in the box office. I think they may have even lost money making it. There is next to no chance of another Firefly movie, series, or anything.
This is a huge shame since Firefly is an amazing series, and Serenity was a wonderful movie. Every sci-fi fan I know loves both of them.
As a former lit major, my favorite part about the Serenity universe is the language - Joss Whedon made a believable furturistic vernacular that's just... beautiful.

Actually, there may be a sequel. They had to make at least 30 million in theatres, and they just hit the mark (in the States), I believe. Plus, I know it did well on DVD. However, the sequel probably won't be on the big screen. The movie was actually incredibly low budget.
Joss has said in numerous places that he wants to take the series further, and had already planned out 2 sequels, I believe, and that there may be some Sci-Fi channel movies done for it.
I've got to say that Firefly is one of my favorite shows. Watching the commentaries and stuff though, is sad that Fox jerked them around, making them change our lovable captain's personality, and not letting them air the pilot first.. Its really Fox's fault that the show didn't do as well as it should have. The writing was amazing, and the idea was incredible.
Like, after they filmed the pilot.. Fox was like "Ya know.. no. We want a new pilot episode.. in 4 days" and Joss and his partner had to write an entire hour episode over the weekend. And it was actually a good episode
I really would have loved to see the movie extended into a whole season of shows like it was supposed to be. There could have been so much more depth.
I blame the space monkeys.

I need to get my hands on Firefly. I'll watch the movie after that.
Heard Firefly is super-good, and from what other people said, I am looking forward to seeing it... one day. Because of course Polish TVs almost never buy good series to show, focusing on some sh%$ 95% of a time. Need to find a DVD with it somewhere.

Firefly was awesome, I remember watching an episode with "Saffron" in it and going damn that's Christina, then I went and checked a small portfolio she gave me a long time ago when she started modeling and was like yep that's her... Firefly made me happy that day.

If there is going to be a sequel, we will be waiting for it for a while - Joss has some other quite interesting stuff up his sleeves at the moment. Oh and if none of you have seen it, try and get the Australian copy of Serenity - it includes an awesome interview he did over here and didn't come on the generic US ones.

OMG FIREFLY!!!
I have the DVD box set of the TV series, plus I also have the movie. The never get old, especially that one episode, Objects in space, with the psycho bounty hunter, "Jubil Early" or something like that.
But the show no longer exists... Does that seem right to you?

I'm sorry, I'm just having a bad day. I'm being held hostage by a psychopathic space ninja and my sister has somehow become a ship. Pardon me if I'm a little cranky.
