Whinge? Isn't that just 'hinge' (like a door hinge) with a W's wuh sound on front?

Yes, apparently. I swear by all the gods, last time I looked, it had a different pronunciation.

I'm changing my rant to now read as: "I hate the word whinge, it sounds retarded. I'm normally cool with British and such, but damn you all if you think that's a proper sounding word."

@noola -
whinge -- complain, whine, especially repeated complaining about minor things (e.g. "Stop whinging" meaning "stop complaining"); a different word from whine, originated in Scottish and Northern English in the 12th century. Hence whinger (derogatory), someone who complains a lot

Huh. So, it's basicly the British version of the word whine? How is it supposed to be pronounced? (assuming that 'hinge' with a 'wuh' in front isn't right. tongue.gif )
Unknown2006-09-11 21:47:50
I'd pronounce it like Wing...but I tend to not pronounce words correctly. :| Even american ones.
Sylphas2006-09-11 23:49:57
Dictionaries say it's pronounced as it looks, which is actually even more annoying to me than having it be a homophone of whine.

An engine might whine, but it will never whinge. wink.gif

There is a distinction, and it's a wonderful word. Surely all americans don't whine when they whinge? tongue.gif

Shiri2006-09-12 01:23:02
Whinge and whine are slightly different, but both are acceptable, and both are acceptable in the context Americans use "whine".

I prefer "whine" actually, but whinge is ours, leave it alone. tongue.gif
Tsuki2006-09-12 01:38:34
So it's like ...

"How many apples do you have?"

"We have two apples," says the American.

"Yes, we have two apples," says the Brit/Aussie, who then frowns. "No wait, we actually have four minus two apples, my mistake, so sorry."

I know, not precisely, but I couldn't resist. "Whine" all the way, ftw!

Or wine ... deal.gif
Shiri2006-09-12 01:39:47
...*peer* I don't get it.

This thread hasn't seen a good rant in a while...

I hate how everyone automatically assumes that I'm out to get them! I mean, yeesh, you try to correct our misguided allies to the east, and they get angry! Isn't it a public service to make sure people get a proper education? I know that, here in the US, when people have a speech impairment, we spend our tax money making sure they get over it! But noooooo. British speech impairments are sacred, and they just whine when they get corrected (although they'll probably call it something stupid, like "whinging," like...making wind with a door hinge, or something like that.) It's like poor Xavius. He raids once every two years, and when he does, they scry him like a cheap tabloid following a married actor with an unknown woman. Get over yourself, stop bastardizing my language with that absurd mockery invented by a bored, elitist duchess, and stop scrying Xavius!
Shiri2006-09-12 01:49:47
I'm also annoyed at you for threatening my various younger family members with Dysolis. So quiet! tongue.gif

(And I'm just going to be the better man here on the language part. Everyone already knows Elryn and I are right, no need to make you look foolish over it. ninja.gif)
