If I had a choice between life long slavery and giving birth to children who would die slaves and being beaten and so on, or freedom with AIDS I think I might lean towards the AIDS.

Well, not all slaves had horrible lives, really. Lived better than a lot of lower class people today, really.

I mean, obviously it sucked regardless, but if I had the choice between a slow and agonizing death and slavery with a decent "master", I'd take the slavery. And clearly most slaves had the same thought.. else they'd have commited suicide or gone on a rampage and gotten themselves killed.

I don't even know how to respond to this... I can't possibly imagine living in a society where you are bred to some stranger and your children are sold off and away from you like litters of puppies. Especially a slave woman where it is quite possible and perfectly okay to be used for any and all sorts of things the most even decent of masters had a right to do. I don't think that is anything like being lower class, maybe the fact that they got fed, clothed and a roof over their head, but that is not what life is all about and many many many did try to escape. Many of the songs my parents use to sing to me are derivatives of special code songs used by slaves in order to give the directions to escape.

You don't know much about lower class life then, where women are in a very similar situation when it comes to the rape and needing to give up their children and all that 'good' stuff.

And ok.. slaves wanted to escape..but there were a lot of slaves.. and the fact that there were a lot of them means that, in general, life as a slave was better than dead.

I'm not saying I support the idea of slavery in any way.. i'm just saying, I'd rather be a slave to a decent master in a fairly comfortable situation (where you're cooking and cleaning or looking after kids, which is what a good number of female slaves did) over death.

Yes, okay, we get it. Slavery sucked, though it may or may not have been preferable to death. It's purely opinion, and I doubt any of you are/were slaves.

I hate that I've got some sort of weird dark speck that's floating around in or on my eye, so that when I look around, it floats across my vision. It's distracting and cause I kind of instinctively try to 'see' it, I'm giving myself eye strain trying to bring it into focus, but cause it's either in or on my eye, it's too close to bring into focus.

I want to go to the doctor to get it checked out, but I can't afford my insurance's copay until next week. It'll probably be gone by then anyway, but it's seriously bothering me. There's something in or on my eye and I don't know what it is! fear.gif

Thanks Phred! biggrin.gif Though my 'floater' doesn't look anything like the ones in the picture, it's probably one of those. Long as it's not some horrible form of eye cancer or a blood clot just waiting to blind me or - like that kid on House last night, a worm sick.gif or parasite or something.

Hopefully it'll be gone before I can afford to go... I'd rather keep my $35.

Well, Noola, don't fool around with it. Check other on-line sites and compare the symptoms to others. Things like Retinal Detachment aren't things to fool around with, and time's an issue. But just read up on it--follow some of the external links the article noted.

A floater can be annoying if you're not used to it. In fact, by bringing this subject up I'll bet a bunch of people are gonna "notice" their floaters today while looking at thier computer screen. tongue.gif
