I hate trying to pull the strengths and weaknesses of the Allied and Central Powers during WWI out of thin air. Any history buffs want to help? smile.gif

I dare you to just say, "Allies had 1337 skills."
Ildaudid2006-12-04 08:16:02
A plus, Spain was not involved, they were too dominated by Franco to get involved.... so they steered clear of it..

Another plus for the allies, Japan made a huge mistake by bombing Pearl Harbor.... The US was not going to get involved really until then....

A downside was the US should it's sicko side by creating concentration camps for Japanese Americans. I mean can't we ever leave a single race alone??? We didn't like the Chinese all happy, so we made opium illegal.... We made marijuana illegal so we could try to find a way to arrest freed slaves... I mean, wow we are some evil bastards sometimes.... ohmy.gif

And, like Forrest Gump would say..... "That's all I have to say about that."

The US also showed that they were a bunch of ZOMG I PWN YOU! freaks what with nuclearizing population centers in Japan.

Yes I joke about nukes and defcon and that stuff all the time, but actually doing it? I don't approve.
Ildaudid2006-12-04 08:56:26
Yeah, I mean.... come on... nuke someone??? We are an insane country, back then and now... I mean our leader gets his orders from God???

I hate projects that you have to search through the specs to find out all the info, only you do it too late so you spent 8 hours doing it the wrong way and its not 5AM and you're nowhere near finished and you have to wake up at 8.

Sylphas2006-12-04 13:27:10
WWI guys, not WWII. tongue.gif The one everyone forgets about.
Diamondais2006-12-04 14:56:09
To add on...

The Americans -wanted nothing to do with the war- until the Lusitania (excuse the spelling, its been a few years) was sunk by enemy ships and many Americans died. After then, they were pissed.

The Allies were able to call on their 'colonies' from the Americas (minus America, some countries though free still willingly followed their Mother Country).
(I dont remember too much of the other side! Though I do remember what happened when they lost.)

Weaknesses:
As with both wars, they had terrible, terrible weather. Swampy terrain, etc. Freezing cold winters, rained a lot, which influenced the spreading of disease because they couldnt clean the trenches, or clean wounds for that matter, from dead bodies or eventually infections, protect themselves from frostbite or gangreen (excuse the spelling once more if its wrong).

Ok, about WWI, duh I thought I saw a II last night...

umm, WWI basically started when that Kaiser was assassinated right? Introduced mustard gas and chemical warfare onto the giant war scene, and Brad Pitt turned into an Indian scalper when the Germans killed his brother glare.gif

No.. It started when the Archduke of Austria and his wife were assassinited by Chez radicals. The Kaiser had nothing to do with that.
Ildaudid2006-12-04 21:10:17
Ok then, count me out, I was only half right... it started with an assassination... but I didn't get the person right.... Guess I shouldn't try out for Jeopardy either huh.gif

I always found it odd how no one really knows or cares about WWI, but WWII is some huge thing.

Probably because of the discrimination and genocide of mass innocents by Hitler.

Even though in both cases there was mass genocide (actuall fighting for those who nitpick) and mistreatment to people. Concentration camps weren't just the WW2

Don't know if it's too late or what, but in any case:

When war broke out the Allied Powers possessed greater overall demographic, industrial, and military resources than the Central Powers and enjoyed easier access to the oceans for trade with neutral countries, particularly with the United States.

All the initial belligerents in World War I were self-sufficient in food except Great Britain and Germany. Great Britain's industrial establishment was slightly superior to Germany's (17 percent of world trade in 1913 as compared with 12 percent for Germany), but Germany's diversified chemical industry facilitated the production of ersatz, or substitute, materials, which compensated for the worst shortages ensuing from the British wartime blockade. The German chemist Fritz Haber was already developing a process for the fixation of nitrogen from air; this process made Germany self-sufficient in explosives and thus no longer dependent on imports of nitrates from Chile.

Of all the initial belligerent nations, only Great Britain had a volunteer army, and this was quite small at the start of the war. The other nations had much larger conscript armies that required three to four years of service from able-bodied males of military age, to be followed by several years in reserve formations.

The higher state of discipline, training, leadership, and armament of the German Army reduced the importance of the initial numerical inferiority of the armies of the Central Powers.

Germany and Austria also enjoyed the advantage of “interior lines of communication,” which enabled them to send their forces to critical points on the battlefronts by the shortest route. According to one estimate, Germany's railway network made it possible to move eight divisions simultaneously from the Western Front to the Eastern Front in four and a half days.

Even greater in importance was the advantage that Germany derived from its strong military traditions and its cadre of highly efficient and disciplined regular officers. Skilled in directing a war of movement and quick to exploit the advantages of flank attacks, German senior officers were to prove generally more capable than their Allied counterparts at directing the operations of large troop formations.

Sea power was largely reckoned in terms of capital ships, or dreadnought battleships and battle cruisers having extremely large guns. Despite intensive competition from the Germans, the British had maintained their superiority in numbers, with the result that, in capital ships, the Allies had an almost two-to-one advantage over the Central Powers.

The numerical superiority of the British Navy, however, was offset by the technological lead of the German Navy in many categories, such as range-finding equipment, magazine protection, searchlights, torpedoes, and mines. Great Britain relied on the Royal Navy not only to ensure necessary imports of food and other supplies in wartime but also to sever the Central Powers' access to the markets of the world.

Mention Italy as well, Italy joining Allies, not Central Powers was a pretty big factor. I wrote an essay on this in fifth grade (not in school, cuz my class was retarded >.>)
