On a related note, a pox on the idiot who decided to make Bioshock require A. online activation. B. An enforced limit of 2 concurrent installations. From what I have read, unless you uninstall the game properly (i.e. Add/remove programs or equivalent) it is still considered installed (The uninstall calls home to record the uninstallation). There are also rumours that this process may not actually work.

I was going "do the right thing" and buy it, but unless they remove their stupid DRM, I think I'll just save myself the hassles and crack the thing. +1 to copy protection leading to increased piracy instead of decreasing it.

What's so bad about the requiring of online activation? I can see how the 2 concurrent installation thing would be a bitch - I used to lend games (perfectly legally) to my schoolfriends all the time.

Already bought it though, especially since it'll probably be worth it - I don't think the copy protection will bother me overmuch.

The online activation is not so bad in itself, but it does lead to the case of the game's useful lifespan being bound by the existence of authentication servers. In combination with proviso B, it just feels to be a bit much to me. They expect me to pay for the privilege of playing the game, then they expect to be able to dictate where (concurrency limit), and when (uncertainty arising from online activation) I can play it. That is just about the definition of bad DRM.

Having to crack an original game you bought is a somewhat funny image.
Shiri2007-08-23 15:08:05
I think you only need online activation to install it, not play it.

I hadn't thought about that issue though. At least by the time they go down there'll hopefully be a widely available crack so anyone reselling or borrowing or something (or just wanting to replay on a new computer) can do so. Mrrrh.

When the game gets old they might release an official patch removing online activation.

WHERE THE censor.gif IS MY EMAIL?
Yrael2007-08-24 01:00:57
How irritating. I turn up on the doorstep, slavering and probably terribly frightening the 15 year old girl who was working there, and.. wait, what? Timeout? Okay, try again. Timeout again? Stupid eftpos. Go to the bank: Oh, sorry, they charged you twice. Go back? "uhm.. I can give you a refund when you can give me a small part of your statement.." So since transactions don't update until monday, I'm basically out 180 dollars, since I was charged twice, and a copy of bioshock. Much rage.

Customer was so annoying I went to the restroom to calm down and I sort of disjointed(?)/pulled the sink out in rage. Didn't help I was working with the "I'm not working here anymore soon so I don't care but I will still be a censor.gif " manager today. I put it neatly back in though, no pipes were damaged. smile.gif

I hope you choke on blood pudding, by the way, ******* .

And I'm going to throw the goodbye present you gave me into the trash. Thank god we're getting rid of you and dumping you onto another store location. Go censor.gif yourself.

Edit: And why are people so dumb they can't use a can opener?!?! Just take 5 seconds tops to figure out "how it works". You'd think a well dressed woman in her mid 30s would know how to use a censor.gif ing can opener by the age of 20.

It takes 'til 20 to learn how to use one of those things? unsure.gif fear.gif

Gahhh.

Firstly, Amazon, for the first time ever (i.e when I'm most hyped about the product) fails to deliver it on their -own- estimated delivery dates. Then the WC3/TFT CD I bought has its CD key already in use by battlenet. THEN, two of my speakers (on the same side, gah) die, and the other 2 make this really loud crackling noise for the whole of every other hour or so. I can't seem to stop it either. And earlier it was even affecting my headphones (though now it isn't.)

Bad day for gaming.

(wub.gif a friend for giving me her keys since she doesn't use them though. But grr amazon and speakers.)

Males (because they can't be called men) who dare to become outraged when a woman won't let herself be walked upon by them. The sort who think of their children as posessions to be fought over and not as human beings to be cared for.

And, also myself for not taking a stronger stand against them.

I think you put too much trust in the software industry.

Nah - at some point (might've been after these posts) I found an article from 2k saying they'd do so. Came with the proviso: "We're not talking about when" - but that's fair enough.
Shiri2007-08-29 10:10:24
ARGH. Not only did Amazon screw up and fail to deliver it until Tuesday, but censor.gif Bioshock has apparently become lost in the postal system somehow. As far as the post office know I've already received it, but I haven't. Amazon had freakin' better give me a full refund so I can buy it somewhere else. What a waste of almost a whole week.
Unknown2007-08-29 10:24:46
You should do it like me and wait for the gold version. Version 1.0 is usually -riddled- with bugs and whatnot.

Besides.. it gets cheaper the longer it's out. >_<
Shiri2007-08-29 10:30:41
I would have been fine with patches. I just wish I had the stupid game though. And I don't have any money to buy one from the shops and then argue about the refund with Amazon later - I have to wait for them to pay me back FIRST.

They damn well better be fast about it.
Arix2007-08-29 10:43:50
threaten to shed on them, that'll scare them straight
Shiri2007-08-29 10:46:21
I'm not a porcupine, I don't do the whole projectile-shedding thing!

EDIT: I also despise trying to call support for this BS they're giving me, only to be connected to an American with a completely impenetrable accent. The site wasn't clear about where I was calling, so I didn't want to risk offending her by asking for a Brit I could actually understand only to find out I was calling some American centre (they better not charge me for this or I'll also be pissed) with no one there that I could understand anyway.

And they won't refund me in any decent amount of time so I can't order the other one in advance, I'll have to wait 5 business days and THEN find some way of taking a train into Lincoln to actually buy a copy myself. Whyyy does the world not want me to play this game? crying.gif
