Simple. Let's say you have two activities, A and B. Trusting your sense of observation, you came to a conclusion that you are more talented at activity A. That is, if you were to spend an equal amount of effort on both activities, you would notice a greater improvement in A than B.

Ergo, having the choice between spending time on activity A and activity B, it is better to learn A, as it gives you greater benefits.
Ergo, spending time on activity B is a WASTE OF TIME. If you do it, you are wasting your time and talent, best spent elsewhere.

In case of pasttime activities, we have to include another factor: entertainment. And it's not the case for most people, but I am NOT able to derive any entertainment from things I'm not (relatively) good in. Relatively in this case meaning of course, good for your amount of experience.

So no, I do not find learning demeaning. But I find it demeaning if you are trying to learn something you suck in. I also had to look up "factor" and "include", which I do find demeaning as well. I hate being a secondary English speaker, it's like being a secondary class citizen - or rather, forum dweller.
