Lack of rants.

Big team meeting this morning. Everyone on my team - developers, business analysts, managers etc. - as well as representatives from our lines of business is in attendance. The agenda of the meeting is to go down the things that still need to be done for our current period of development. Somewhere along the line, another developer mentions that we need to come up with a set of screens for integrating something I'm doing with other modules on the application. My manager's manager pipes up, "Don't we have all the design work for that done?"

When responded to in the negative, he says, "Well, we spent a month of design and analysis, and part of that was to get those screens designed for the other modules." I apologized for misunderstanding that during the design phase, and we moved on.

Well, the reality of it is that those screens were not part of the design and analysis phase, and that by request of my manager's manager. Furthermore, I had 18 hours for analysis and design, not a month. So, the upshot is that my entire team and business reps were told that I was given a month to do something and didn't do it. It doesn't help that the overall project is behind, and I'm a key part of it.

Eventually, the meeting ends, I grab a sandwich, and I sit down to notice that the -other- development team is having a critical failure in their application, and nobody knows why. My manager sends out an email to all the developers asking for help. Since my manager sits two feet away from me, I explain to him what the problem is and what needs to happen to fix it. He tests this out, it works, so he fixes it. He then calls the other team's lead, explains to him what the problem was, explains how he fixed it, and hangs up. No mention of me at all.

I'm not saying that people aren't having worse days than I am, but beginning the workday by having your competence publicly criticized and someone else taking credit for your saving an application is just not a good way to start things.

Aaaaand my manager just informed me that he's transitioning his disaster recovery responsibilities to my position, which means I get to attend a meeting from 12am - 5:30am Sunday morning to listen to some guy tell me that my application was taken down and that it came back up, again.

Sounds like you just need to be more assertive. It is okay to say "I'm sorry, I worked on the design for a few days, but I was under the impression that those screens weren't a part of it because..." - you have to speak up! Don't argue with your superiors, but don't be afraid to speak up and explain the reality of the situation. Any manager that would get on to you for that does not deserve to be a manager anyway.

So I see this guy walking around, clean cut, nice build, but looks like a total ass. It just sort of, eminated from him, like stink from a dumpster.

Sure enough, tailing behind him is his little proto-self progeny. Cute little blonde kid, probably four or five, wearing a shirt that says "I'm going to be your boss someday".

I felt sooo bad for that kid. It's like, he'll never get the chance to be anything other than a spoiled self absorbed prick with a false sense of entitlement.

...on the other hand, maybe he'll turn 13 and, in an act of rebellion, turn into a really nice person? Yeah, I'll go with that. It's less sad. suspicious.gif

I met with the man afterward, we cleared the air, and he apologized.

I hear what you're saying, but since the "whatever reason" was his own directive, I decided to handle that matter privately rather than publicly. I've never had anything good coming out of making a co-worker look bad in public, especially my boss' boss, even if it's their own fault. I just didn't think this particular issue was worth it, although it was still upsetting.

That's all fair enough, I don't really blame you. At the same time, it wouldn't be you making them look bad, it would be them making themselves look bad, since it was their mistake. They are simply trying to frame it as your mistake when that is not the case.

I've had this happen with my manager a few times. I ignored it for the most part, until she called me in for a private meeting about my "performance." Since then, I've been taking diligent notes about everything we talk about, so that any time there is a concern or confusion over something that was or was not done, we can look back at them. She's never offended and rarely looks bad, but I don't look bad for other peoples' mistakes either. Besides that, even if it were your fault, it seems less-than-professional for the manager to bring that up during the group meeting. He was making you look bad for something you didn't actually do.

I'm not sure if this is a rave or rant, but I stayed up until 3am and skipped my first lecture of the day under the false pretense that my biological anth midterm was TODAY when in fact it is THURSDAY. Stupid unorganized syllabus!

AND the exam on thursday is 8am-9:30 instead of during class at 11am, and now I'll be late for my other class which starts at 9:30.

I suppose on the bright side I read 165 pages of my textbook plus the additional readings and made flashcards already so now I'll be sure to ace my test on Thursday :/.

I've so done things like that before! One time, in college, I just knew I had a paper due for my 8am Lit class the next day, so I worked all day on it and well into the night. I think it was like 4am when I finally finished. Got a couple of hours sleep and then went to the computer lab to print out my paper (I didn't have a printer then either!) and got to class, ready to hand in my work - only to discover it wasn't due till the next monday.

I felt silly.... BUT I had my paper ready and waiting. laugh.gif

Hee. I did something like that for one class.

My rant is about computer programming. I kept messing up on the implementation, so I tried to take a break by doing other things. Then I was wondering why the computer was so slow. Click Eclipse. I was running four threads, each going through an infinite loop. <_<;;

Its funny when things work like that. I've had a program take a day to run due to memory leaks caused by using regular expressions. After me and another worked on it for a few more hours, we got it to run properly in something like 3 minutes. laugh.gif Keep at it, the feeling of getting a tough program to work is awesome.

Because I now know what the Pedobear is, I've been having nightmares that every time I finally finish Reiha's portrait, I have to throw it away BECAUSE WE'RE A PEDOPHILE TEAM. Then Kromsh scolds me or something. *sigh*

Well, you told me you look like Shiri, and I have seen his pic. But for some reason I was both reading a PM you sent and talking to you, you being all disembodied and stuff. biggrin.gif

For no apparent reason, my computer is slowing down. I limited running processes and miscellaneous applications. The result of this is Cmud runs unbearably slow - my control-q is slower by a factor of three. I can't fight in a group right now without lagging. No clue why my computer is acting this way.
