There's millions of addicts to lots of drugs, tobacco just happens to be legal. Banning it is an option, but it likely wouldn't be too effective.
It'd go over about as well as Prohibition did.

5 PACKS ?! That's CRAZY. That would be like... continuous - one right after another.
But not going into economy and business issues, banning it is not really an option because of millions of addicts.

I doubt it, the circumstances are hardly similar. I'm not saying it would be any better, but the majority of smokers, etc. don't make their own products and the USA has changed a lot since previous prohibitions.

I actually think that the reaction would be even worse than the Prohibition as far as all that goes. I think that if tobacco became illegal the black-market on it would make heroine look insignificant. But I don't think anyone would actually try it at all because the public outcry would be so dramatic. Keeping it out of public places and taxed to high-heaven is probably as banned as it's going to get.

It's not the same.
Tobacco has always been legal, and huge industry was being build around it. It has even been advertised all the time. Also, while it is bad for health long-term, it's still not as destructive as most of drugs, and most importantly it does not alter behaviour - in that regard I'd be more keen on banning alcohol.
Noola2008-01-07 19:20:27
I'm for making them all legal, placed under FDA regulation and taxed heavily myself. But that'll never happen.

TV ads for tobacco have been banned in America for a while, while anti-smoking campaigns are all over the place. It's taxed heavily in many states and most of the Western world forbids smoking in many public places. The next step should be to increase taxes yearly to slowly get rid of it, and ban it outright if that doesn't work. But I'm probably only saying that because I'm sick of cigarettes after working in a convenience store.
The behavior thing brings up something I've wondered for a while. I don't see why anyone would start smoking, other than peer pressure (but it had to start somewhere!): oh yay, let's inhale smoke and God only knows what else, something that our bodies naturally reject. Yeah, brilliant. Alcohol, on the other hand, tends to temporarily favorably alter experiences for its users, so I can almost understand that.
Hey, we're supposed to be ranting. Uh...I hate money. I never have enough of it.

I know quite a few people who have started smoking recently. They enjoy the calming sensation and don't mind the smoke.

I'm aware of that, I think in whole EU it's the same - there are campaigns and there is no advertisement. Cigs are expensive. Lately. As opposed to for decades before that.

I don't see why anyone would start drinking - it's not tasty, there's revolting stomach and possibly throwing up, there's hangover. Weed seems so much better.

My grandmother died from emphysema and many of my aunts/uncles have a lot of issues after being lifelong smokers, so I hate smoking. It's a money sink and it's not at all healthy (that's not even me being judgemental, it's just..the facts).
I HATE those. Last year I had pink eye in both eyes after having a cold for a few weeks...then a week later woke up the day before Spring Break with an ear infection in one ear..which then spread to both. Over break I was taking about 12 pills a day

I -think- I have an ear infection, which I woke up with this morning. Otherwise I am just going deaf in my left ear for no apparent reason. I'll know in a couple hours when I go to the doctor. But blargh.

Oh, I agree. Smoking is nasty. It makes everything that goes near it smell bad and kissing someone who smokes makes one want to gag. My mother smoked from the time she was 14 and she died of lung cancer. I'd rather chew glass than smoke a cigarette even without the fact that my lungs get icky around too much of it even second hand. And ITA about it being a money sink.
All that said, I really don't see it ever being completely banned. Also, frankly, as long as folks take their smoking outside and away from me (and other non-smokers), I figure it's their business if they want to kill themselves a little at a time.

Ear infections are awful. I haven't had one in years, but I remember the sick pain of it all and hope that you nip yours in the bud before it gets too serious.

I agree with this. If it weren't for having to sleep, I'd get so much more done (or I'd get nothing more done - I'd just have more procrastination time! ) Though, I gotta admit, I love to nap. Weird!

I believe Bejamin Franklin did the same thing, however I know that Moshe Ben Maimon (Rambam) slept 4 hours a day, was a a practicing physician, a practicing Rabbi, and was still able to write 6 Jewish books, and 9 medical books. (many of which still exist/ are read today)

And wow that winter break feels so short in hindsight. The snow is melting here too *mumble*
