I had one when I was a kid. Grew up with one. My dad named him "Baron." I wanted "Scorpion" (I was a little twit who just got done watching Mortal Kombat. If I recall, I saw it when it was in movie theatres and thought Scorpion was the best character in the show.) Had to put him down for mauling a little cousin who we think was taunting him but couldn't prove. Now I live next to an older German couple who have one. She comes around to play when shoveling snow.

I don't just hate small yappers, I loathe them.

I wub.gif nearly every animal. Even animals a lot of people don't like (sharks, snakes, rodents, spiders). But I have terrible allergies to pets and can't have any, except for reptiles. And my parents won't let me have a reptile (I'd LOVE a snake) losewings.gif

Back when I worked in other people's houses, I used to worry about going in with little dogs. Big dogs are generally pretty good natured and well trained. Small dogs aren't often bred for personality and they're far, far more likely to be paranoid, insecure, violent, poorly trained vermin. Not all, mind you--any dog can be trained to be a good dog, but small dogs are harder to train and the owners of small dogs are less likely to acknowledge that training isn't just for tricks and not peeing on the floor. I've been bit by more small dogs than I can remember, but never been more than barked at by a large dog.

Yeah, I can't imagine why people would get a small dog.

I hold to the belief that there is a Divine Reason why that most small dogs are only a little bit bigger than a football. Hint Hint.

Well, as someone who's had small dogs all her life (except for now when my landlord won't allow dogs or cats cry.gif ), small dogs are just as awesome as big dogs. Even awesomer in some ways cause a big dog can't sit in your lap. (Despite what my brothers Rottie thinks! laugh.gif )

For as many dozens of bites as I've gotten on the job, I've only had to kick one. Most of them stop biting if you pin them on their backs, get in their face, and scold them. You still need the customer to leave the room, but you can come to a temporary understanding quickly enough. This one dog, though, wouldn't let up, and the owner wouldn't acknowledge the red spot around the hole at the bottom of my khakis. I felt horrible, but I had to do something. I couldn't get him to stop by scolding, sharp nudges with my foot just made him angrier, so I kicked hard at his front leg and left him with a mild limp.

I felt horrible. I really did. I could tell by the owner's nonchalant attitude that the dog just never learned right from wrong. It's perfectly natural for dogs, or just about any predatory pack animal, to be aggressive towards outsiders. When it came down to me risking serious injury or risking serious injury to the dog, though, it wasn't that hard of a choice.

You guys are way too harsh on small dogs. I like friendly large dogs, but they're just not as cute as (say) a cockerspaniel. And all 3 of my cockerspaniels have been lovely with strangers. They get overexcited and too friendly but they've never bitten anyone. Dot used to dislike the postman and bark at him but when dad opened the door and let her out to face him one day she just rolled over and looked submissive.

I don't just like small dogs...just living in an appartment, having a big dog is almost illegal. (And somewhat inhumane, big dogs need a lot more space and outdoorsness then little dogs.) I like all animals too...

But little dogs are cute. Toff is especially fierce and has an attitude that likely rivals any big dog's aggressiveness >_> Tiny little thing that fits in the palms of my hands regularily challenges her 10X+ size brethren >_>

She's sweet though too...I've been training her out of the biting (puppies bite when they teethe, I'm just trying to get her to bite the right things), and she stops immediately even when playing if you just tell her to stop biting.

My grandma has 2 shi tzus and Toff's younger sister (runt of the litter)...it's cute seeing all six little dogs together. You'd never fit six big dogs in an appartment like that.

I don't consider those to be small dogs though. They smell awful though unsure.gif

...you must have some weird cockerspaniels if they're not small. I mean, they're not Chihuahua size, but I can pick 'em up...

Well, they're not small and yappy and annoying like poodles, chihuahuas, jack russles, shi tzus, palmeranians, etc. Both the cocker spaniels I've been around have been pleasant and friendly, and larger then the above mentioned varieties. I mean, if a german shepard holds still I can lift one, doesn't make it small tongue.gif
Xavius2008-03-10 02:28:07
Cocker spaniels are mellow. They don't count. Any small dog can be a good dog. I really think it's more a reflection on the owners than anything.
Shiri2008-03-10 03:01:03
Hm, ok then. As long as mine aren't being slandered here. tongue.gif

Greyhounds ( the retired racers not puppies) do just fine in an apartment if you take them out four times a day. They are lazy now and want to enjoy their retirement. So a greyhound won't mind if the apartment is small. They are used to being in kennels all the time anyway, so an apartment is a step up!

I remember my friend's Chihuahua would bark at me incessantly, all the time, constantly, and my friend's mother spoiled it quite rotten.

I finally just had to buckle down, go up to it's sleeping cage, look it straight in the eyes, and say in my most menacing voice, "Go ahead, bark at me, do it, just see what happens next."

It quieted down, but I still felt a pang of guilt, not quite as large as the satisfaction of getting the damn thing to quiet down though.
