Apparently, double spacing after sentences is no longer proper. I was taught, almost having my fingers broken in to teach me, that you double space after every sentence, colon, semi-colon, and such. I was wondering why people kept bugging me about the double spaces, and then I'm told they changed it.

Mother's Day. Mom's dead.
Following up with father's day.
Don't know my real dad, but I have a guy who says he's my dad and isn't, and my stepdad, both who suck pretty bad.
Rave: Thanks for giving me credits anyway!

That's strange. I was taught the same thing, and then designs in IRE games (rooms and items and such) dictated that single-spacing was the norm. I've always assumed it was the exception, rather than the rule.

I'll throw my hat into the "taught to double space" pile. Just looks more proper.

Double spacing with a wide monospace font looks horrible. IRE dictates single spacing for aesthetics.
Double spacing after a period normally doesn't really matter either way. Modern fonts have variable width spaces and have turned the entire debate into the sort of pedantics that even the most pedantic of pedants can be ashamed of. When you use a non-Arial font in something like Microsoft Word (notepad doesn't count here), if you look really closely, you'll notice that the first space after a period is bigger than the spaces between words, and the second space is smaller. If you don't believe me, lean in really close to your computer and count pixels. There is a visible difference between single and double spacing still, but it should be perfectly readable either way.

Unless of course you're submitting a manuscript to an editor/publisher, then you still want to double-space after ending sentences, because it makes it clear that a period is a period and not a typoed comma and vice-versa.
But in casual or even academic writing, yeah, there isn't much need to follow that 'rule.'
