I'm not sure if this is just me being retarded, but due to the fact that east is listed before west I always imagine east as left and west as right (east, west -- east is on the left, west is on the right). This causes problems in itself talking to people, but when I'm reading a map it becomes almost impossible to remember 10 minutes later whether that left I took was looking at the directions list (and thus east) or looking at the map (and thus west), which makes me get lost a lot.
So, anyway, I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem, but it could be solved by just putting the westward directions before the eastward ones when listing exits.

First time I've heard anyone complain about that. Hrm. Have you done a lot of MUDing, or is this your first?

I don't know if it would be too helpful. What about north/south exits, in/out exits, and up/down exits? The position in the sentence can't always give a spatial hint.
Have you tried playing with Nexus, the java client that works from the Lusternian website? It has a pretty nifty compass that will be a lot more help here, I think.

I've played a few other MUDs before this, achaea for the longest (I had the same problem there). And yes I use the nexus client, but I never look at the compass...also, it isn't an issue with northsouth because they aren't oriented in their respective directions (IE, it's either north, south or south, north not:
north
south
or
south
north
And I think if it was the latter, it would get a little confusing. Same for up and down, and in and out. It only becomes a problem with west and east because they're left and right directions that are oriented in the list the oposite way from what they actually are on a map.

He has a good point..
I've always thought of east as right nomatter what though.. which gives me issues when I go to the east coast, and the ocean is on the wrong side of me.
However, I think the exits are listed alphabeitacally.

"You see exits leading west, down, and in."
You didn't research that much, did you Dag?

Ahha..
The logical way of posting exists is N, Ne, E, SE, S, Sw, W, Nw, up, down, in , out. Thats clockwise basically..
I guess the original poster wants it, N, Nw, w, Sw, S, se, ,e , ne, up, down, in out.

Er, east isn't right. It's a position relative to the earth, not to you. It's right when you face north.
Soll2006-07-04 20:43:51
This is obviously correct, Verithrax, but I would always feel (when playing Lusternia) that north is going forward. Thus, going east would be going right. Going south would be backward, and going west would be to the left. I know this is not 'politically' correct, but it is how I (and possibly a number of others) relate to the directions.

If you switch to a non-nexus client, or find someone who can do something like this is Nexus, you could always(this is for zMud)
#TRIGGER {east(*)west} {#SUB {west%1east}}
#TRIGGER {east(*)west} {#SUB {west%1east}}

This is quite possibly related to my complete inability to orient myself, but I always feel that, like Soll, north is forwards, east is right, et cetera. In real life I'm always lost because I always feel like I'm going north.
