I've made about 2.7 million from my tradeskill without a shop. It's not impossible. Profits would be 50% higher with a shop, but don't NEED it.

Ok.. you're an herbalist.. you break all the rules tongue.gif

But cooks, tailors, and jewellers need a shop to see any real profit, unless they devote a large portion of their IC time to promotion and selling.

And we devote a lot of time to replanting. sad.gif

I spend so much on food feeding my mounts.

I would go ballistic about certain people complaining and nerf whining, but I won't. Instead, I'll give an idea!
How about new cooking skills are added at Adept, Expert, and Mythical, that allow one to cook herbs into the food, with the same curing effect, and on herb balance. The first level allows one herb to be cooked in, so that it's basically an herb, but can also give you some stomach back. The second level allows two herbs to be cooked in, at slightly longer balance. The third allows three herbs to be cooked in, at slightly longer balance when consumed.
Sylphas2006-06-26 17:04:06
That would be great. Level 2 faster herb balance and cookies curing 3 afflictions at once.
Unknown2006-06-26 17:16:19
I was thinking it would be a nice way to get out of certain locks, mean poison combos, or to counter some of the nastier mob afflictions. You would have to predict what afflictions you would be getting, and cook that particular mix, so it's not exactly "curing three afflictions per round", unless you happen to be able to see the future and cook really quickly.
Sylphas2006-06-26 18:03:05
There are only a few effective combinations, and you do know mobs in advance. Also, herbs cure more than one affliction, so it wouldn't be hard to find something very good to cook.

Because I sell to all the Celestians and thus steal your business tongue.gif

I mean, as much as I moan about not making any money at forging IG, I've been pretty fortunate to have gotten some very generous customers recently, and I heart them very very much. And all you who take the gear and run, I hope you sleep with your eyes open. ninja.gif (yes, such censor.gif censor.gif censor.gifs do exist and should be dragged out, stabbed, shot, incinerated, shoved into a nuclear reactor, and then scattered across running water.)

My shop only sells to glomdoring *peer* which I'm sure is part of the problem, but even when I had a shop in Magnagora, most people buy forged items in person, and not from a shop.

I used to, but I kind of feel bad for Iraen so I get my stuffs from her shop now when I need it. Think I have to get a new shield soon...
Iraen2006-06-27 21:38:12
So YOU'RE my one customer... wink.gif

I do ok considering I have mostly forged items in my shops; most of what sells is scabbards, leather armour and standard (not master) weapons, and it's more than enough to cover taxes on two shops and cartel submission fees. However, I'm not out to strike a fortune with shopkeeping, my goal is to flesh out the variety of wares available in Serenwilde and consistently stock some items that people need, however rarely that might be.

And I always buy food, I don't have the patience to forage!
Unknown2006-06-27 21:55:28
something that you learn on Lusty... never buy Weapons on shops. You want cheap and nice weapons? Either forge them yourself or ask a friend to forge them for you or try to bribe a forger.... Not recomendable to buy weapons from shops

And concerning the thread..

DON'T!!!!!!!! mad.gif
Arix2006-06-27 23:35:39
I'll sell food and booze to just about anyone, but I only do herofetes for Sernwilde and Magnagora

I still really like my idea. I'm not even a cook. Or someone who is good enough at curing to care. Anyone else?
Jadryga2006-07-04 10:31:03
*cough*

As a spatula-wielding, shop-owning cook in Magnagora, land of Carrion Eaters, I can safely say you CAN make a profit cook.gif

There's something people will want from every skillset (even cooking), all you have to do is provide it. Sure, some of them take time, and not-so-easily available ingredients, but it can be done.

At one point, I owned 5 shops in Mag, and I turned a nice profit from all of them, despite my personal policy not to compete with or undersell other merchants. Now I only own 2 since I was away for a VERY long time, and I still pick up a tidy profit.

One thing I'll admit, though. Without a shop, as a cook, you're screwed. Without a way to organize our cartel, such as a channel where we can converse, it's basically a dog-eat-dog world. If you can't get a shop, you die out, leaving a monopoly of those who survived.

I also have to admit I do source other goods, though, for my shops.

And I love Folkien's idea. Herbed food would be nice. Half my infusions are useless at the moment: Sleep, botulism, love, speed, death, constitution.

Out of those, I only use constitution. How on earth are you going to get someone to die from a crotamine steak? I mean, if it were incurable, maybe. But anyone a brain, who's read HELP CURELIST and can ask questions would know how to cure it doh.gif

Herbed food that could cure would be extremely welcome. Perhaps something that could cure just a little bit, like a weak version of sparkles, or health, but taken after certain intervals, til you're full. Well, or something like super sparkles, where if I crush 5 sparkleberries and SPRINKLE them onto my food, I'd get something that can cure perhaps 4 times the amount a sparkleberry would, but which can be used only once in a long time, since it would satiate you. Rather like Vitality, food-style.

Or... curative wine! Infusing sparkleberries into wine would enhance the properties of the wine, making it a curative slightly stronger than sparkles or health, that can be taken at specific intervals, but which would make you drunk if taken too much (obviously a bad thing in combat). That would be incentive for there to actually be drinks in Lusternia for reasons other than getting drunk. Oh, and it can be addictive if used too much as well. You become... wait for it... alcoholic! To the point where you can't function without it until it wears off from your system (which could take real days!).
Unknown2006-07-04 11:35:10
I've always believed that poisoned food should actually be hidden, which actually makes them worthwhile, and having tasting show if or if not the food is poisoned. It would make forcefeed useful for combat, and add in something to do besides forcing people to empty vials.

I think they should just make Tea infusions with the herbs instead of adding them to foods, being able to create different combinations of herbs to provide a different effect.

IDEA! Wait for iiiit...

Garlic Bread!

Once eaten, you can BREATHE to do the same thing as Skunk, and just BREATHE to do teh same thing as Skunk-spraying the ground.

Maybe it would give a different message than the usual gag. Garlic doesn't make you wanna throw up. Usually.
