Well, looking back in the forums made me discover the old thread about the racial overhaul, and I was thinking to myself...damn, there still are some races no one plays.
I dislike that. I really start to like Lusty again, and then I hate to see so much potential already wasted at the racial choice. Some races just don't work, and I think they should be changed, made better or made worse.
Following races need to be looked at, I think:
Too bad:
Dracnari
Dwarf
Trill
Viscanti
Tae'dae
Too good:
Furrikin
Human
Merians
Mugwump
I am open to discuss any of those, but I'd rather hear your own oppinion before I state mine. Some of those might be a surprise, but still, I think they need toning down/up

Merian and furrikin are definitely not too good.
Mugwump, I'm not sure, it's not THAT overpowered.
Everything else I agree with you on.

While I agree with you on the ones listed in the Bad, I dont see anything too good about the ones you listed. Humans are average, their only good thing is the extra experience and the stat changes. The experience isnt too much actually and with the changes to how magic works now, they dont measure up to a Specced Elfen or Merian when hunting.
Daganev2006-07-20 21:03:49
I wonder if you raise the int on tae'dae to like, 12, if they would be strong enough to overcome the balance penalties.
That, or turn all the level 3 stuff, into level 2 stuff. But then there is a problem with Igasho.
Why do we have igasho and tae'dae?

I don't know if it needs to be as drastic as the last one but we definately do need to look at minor changes to races. However, I'm pretty sure they're going to be changing the amount of def stacking so that will effect races a lot.

Well, I more meant Merian telekinets which can be damn tanky AND damn hardhitters. Furrikin are actually a very nice race, which I dislike the racial tumble. I'd give them a racial burrow or something.
Mugwumps, I think they can be too good in experienced hands, but maybe that's a bit downgraded now with hexes being changed and all.
Humans are there because they just get too good with higher levels. A level 95 human mage is like a Viscanti, just without the penalty and faster experience gain.

Don't forget krokani.
Ashteru2006-07-20 21:14:58
Krokani are GOOD.
Daganev2006-07-20 21:15:21
Theres nothing wrong with krokani. humans are just better at higher levels.

Merians are wonderful as Aquamancers for bashing, but they are awful when it comes to taking (HP) damage. They're fine. It's a tradeoff.

As I said, only the telekinetic ones with forcefield irk me. I am not sure why fishy races have that high charisma anyway. That smell must be a turnoff.

Furrikin are NOT too good. We have decent cha, ok int, workable con, nice dex. We're a bit faster, and we're small. Magic damage is all we're great against, and it's not that big a deal; anyone with a main magic damage attack has other options. We're not really that great at anything, and we're not that bad at anything.
Furrikin are just about perfect, although I'd love to lose two levels of magic resist for a 1 point con buff.
My overall gripe with the races is still that Warriors usually get high str/high con/decent dex, and can use their intelligence, where magic classes get high int/bad con and don't care about dex or str. If you look at stat point totals, you almost have to weight them depending on which class that person is.

Hey, we don't smell! Not too badly, anyway.
Forcefield is next to useless in PvP. Use it and you're sure to burn out and lose a heap of experience. It's fine for bashing, but it's the worst thing to have on if you get jumped and you know you're going to die.

Okay. Let me say it out: I don't like roll.

If you burn out with forcefield, you are dead anyway, but usually you are tankier with forcefield than with your normal health. I did just fine tanking Silimaur with his Champhelm when I had forcefield on, nowhere near of burning out. The channel locked is bad, but since you can use it on all channels, you can really choose.
Sylphas2006-07-20 21:31:23
If you're taking 4k or so damage too fast to turn it off, sure. It can't be that hard to soak 3k damage, then turn off forcefield and go back to using health until you can get some ego back. It'll hurt your offense, but if you're just trying not to die, it's not a bad tactic, I'd think. Doesn't even use power.
As far as I know, roll is simply tumble. It's only fast because we're small. Faelings and dwarves can do the same thing with tumble.

Merians are just obnoxious because of all of their achievements, thats why they have such high Charisma, to keep up with their racial ego
(I have no problem with Merians, just makes sense)

Merians, Mugwump, and Furrikin are fine. Humans are fine too, maybe a little too good when fully evolved (very nice stats with no penalties, and high constitution for a magical class), but otherwise, fine.
However, I could see Trill, Dwarves, and Tae'Dae getting buffed (don't feel quite the same for Dracnari, maybe one less sip penalty). Perhaps the Viscanti could drop their sip penalty, but eh. Trill, Dwarves and Tae'Dae could definitely use some love.
Dwarves were hit especially hard by the nerf bat, completely unnecessarily due to common opinion because Narsrim and I happened to be that race. An equilibrium penalty was just to much, they could stand to have both the balance and equilibrium penalty removed.
Mugwumps, I definitely don't think are overpowered. They pay for their speed dearly as the least tanky race by a large margin. They have 10 constitution, no sip bonus, and level 3 lightning and fire weaknesses, two of the most common and damaging elements. Due to the nerf to speed bonuses/negatives, their level 3 equilibrium boost is basically identical to the previous level 2. Hexes is almost useless as any race but Mugwump.

Things I'd love to see change with Trill are...
- +1 CON buff. I'd prefer if this was free, but if you must, take it from DEX.
- +1 INT buff. Take this from DEX too.
- Buff the Flying HP and Mana regen to Level 3. No one fights in the skies anyway, (Hexagram/Geyser, anyone?) so our regen is really only useful against mobs.
- I'd be willing to take a Lvl 2 or 3 fire weakness if we could get some kind of faster balance or equilibrium.
- A Racial language!

I've noticed that there are some more trill around nowadays, usually at least four or more, compared to 1 or 2 in the old days >.> Sometimes even 10 are on! But anyway, I really don't mind the small pop'n, it kinda makes sense too since their home is frozen and they don't even have their own village, but when Halli comes around in the next 5 years or so, they should get some nice specializations. Regardless!, some things I thought would be nifty for trill would be more charisma, since they're an artsy-fartsy race, no? And maybe a racial attribute that can distinguish them from other flyers, such as flying and moving into another room at the same time, 'cuz they got big strong wings.
edit: Huh, it seems different trill got differing opinions Trill have hollow bones so I could see why they have the slightly low con, and also the slightly high dex. Trill are graceful people.

This should be a poll by the way.....Just asking for yes or no to the racial overhaul question. ^^""
