Depends on how fast lisp can patternmatch, and I think the answer is pretty darn fast. We'll have to find out though, won't we?
Today's computers are fast. Just build something that scales reasonably linearly when you tack >1 CPU and >1 server at it and you'll find you've got more CPU cycles to spare for what you've got in mind (as if you run out of CPU you can just tack on another server.)
It is tricksy. I don't know of any MUD environments that scale to multi-server setups. I know the graphical MMORPGs like WoW do.

Absolutely seconded on all those that recommend Armageddon.
Great MUD.
Two things you may not lilke:
1. Low on people - This has been getting better all the time, but especially if you're an off-peak player, or play in one of the less dominant cities/areas/clans, things can get pretty desolate.
2. Most of the conflict is not Org vs. Org, but more you vs. the world. Even when you're in an org, it's not all loving and accepting like guilds/cities/communes in IRE games are.

Hmm, some good suggestions so far. I'm not personally that fond of the Rapture engine, though several descent games were made with it despite that. From what I've seen of Illyrias combat logs, it honestly doesn't look like that great of a system at all, even for IRE.
Firstly Rapture is an engine in the sense of LP being an engine. It provides NOTHING. Its just a programming language and a runtime. So in theory unless you code for it, your opinion of Rapture shouldn't matter. All the IRE games are the same/similar because they start off from a stripped down version of Achaea as the base library.
Ilyrias is written from scratch, its not by IRE, the similarity in look and feel is because the obvious customers to aim at are existing IRE customers so you make things as similar as possible, it is however fundamentally different in almost every way. I can't be more specific than the forums are because of the NDA but seriously it doesn't feel like an IRE game when you actually play it.

The first time I made a character I spent a day writing up the request, including background etc, got a reply saying it was teh best first time character request they ever had....fell down a sewer 5 minutes later and died. Needless to say I didn't go back.
Unknown2006-07-21 13:22:59
hmmmm... sounds like fun, just trying to survive not killing myself, without anyones help
Joli2006-07-21 14:40:49
For some reason everytime I log onto arm I feel scared. My poor little half-elf doesn't know anything at all. I haven't even figured out how to make food yet.
Unknown2006-07-21 14:42:47
My brother played Armageddon and was bored to death.
As for me, I refuse to play "OMG gritty! more grittiness!" systems on principle. They either turn into grief-fests or people refuse to RP gritty characters, ruining the theme.

shadows of isildur is a great roleplay mud that has rp for every conflict that happens. making a character is rather tedius but I enjoy the mud emencely.

Presenting the new style of MUD... The DMUD! Dynamic Multi-User Domain!

Necromundus looked interesting when I noticed it on TMS, I keep meaning to check it out.
I open beta'd that. It doesn't emphasize conflict and RP is optional. Oh, and it's a MUSH codebase with some softcode tacked on. I thought the combat system was a nice thought but when I was in there, it wasn't much as all you could do was bash and it was pretty repetitive.
EDIT: Guido, you played OS? Who were you there?
Unknown2006-07-21 18:00:59
Heh, I didn't play OS too long. I was the gunner on the battleship Alexandra, though I went inactive before its first engagement. And Nedermeyer is my personal hero.
Armageddon > Shadows of Isildur. As for your character, Xavius, that sounds rather odd, though not impossible. If you create a Labyrinth-dweller (crime infested lawless slum) you can expect that sort of thing, but if you were in a city proper you should have started screaming for a guard or a Templar and/or wished up for an imm to control one, though it depends on the circumstances.
And yes, it's very confusing at first. Takes awhile to master the commands and learn your way around, but I think it's worth it.

Armaggedon and SOL didn't attract me much, but Harshlands is pretty good for resting from all the excess in a low fantasy world.
Unknown2006-07-21 20:01:08
I might be wrong, but reading Harshlands' website gave me the impression that it's a game like "my first character will be a candlemaker's journeyman, and after he expires of old age my acumulated RP points will let me create a stablehand! huzzah!".
Please prove me wrong.
Please prove me wrong.
Verithrax2006-07-21 20:14:37
My current character is an apprentice musician, actually, and I've been enjoying it very much. There are a lot of roles avaliable fore starting characters, but yes, candlemakers are an option. Most starting characters are, however, distributed around lower clergy, innkeepers, barmaids, guards, poor people in general, and courtesans.

You know that Baram (Hajamin) -just- coded the first skillset, right? I don't think the log of punches and kicks should indicate to you how the system as a whole is going to work.

Wow.. I want this. -goes to find-
ZOMG NO ONE EVER TALKS ON ARM. I can't even harvest stuff from the plants in the city or it's considered stealing. WHAT THE EFF?
Diamondais2006-07-21 22:27:18
Blah Harshlands looks interesting but I shouldnt try it til I can download Mush.
Unknown2006-07-21 23:43:49
Should speak to Gwylifar about Harshlands. He's playing there now, seems to like it alot.
As for Ilyrias, keep in mind, as Richter said it's just now getting combat systems coded in...what you saw on there is the very base "no looks added" making the code work. Give it time, there's folks working on strictly writing effects (as in what happens when you cast/swing/etc), there's folks adding more content all the time.
Give us a chance to build before you beat on us eh?
