Was there any reason to making this thread? Besides wanting a flame war? You don't even really have an opening statement.
Sylphas2006-07-21 16:58:19
Aww, but I need a reason to argue. If I just start saying "I'm right and you're wrong," I'm not only lying, I'll actually have to shoot myself in the face.
Unknown2006-07-21 17:01:13
Actually I was kinda trying to get the 2 out of the Stem thing with thier religious arguements... I'll make a statement just to get flamed if you like
Sylphas2006-07-21 17:04:29
It won't work. The whole debate is based on morality, which has incredibly strong ties to religion. If you remove the religious element, there almost isn't an argument at all.

Nothing ever works out for me does it?
...There'd be an arguement, it's just that they keep talking about the worth of souls and stuff, not even bothering to really relate it to anyhting but thier ego

I can say "I'm right and you're wrong as a religious statement." You see, I am a POEE >< POPE >< and that entitles me to claim infallibility. It's a lot like being a follower of any other religion, except we know we're just arbitrarily claiming infallibility, instead of citing some bogus authority as infallible.
There, flamewar started. Happy now? The stem cell thing is inextricably linked to religion for as long as people insist that their religions should be a basis for everyone's morality. So you're not going to change the flow of discussion there, but at least we might be able to get some good flames in here, to annoy you.

I wasn't arguing religion, I was making a comment about human nature based on a story, which just happens to also be in a book which deals with religion.
I could have just as easily mentioned the story of Humans Vs the X-men, where people fought because of magical powers, and not because of technology. But Humans vs X-men took me a few minutes to come up with, and Adam and Eve took me a split second.
I can't argue religion with anyone here because my concepts of Religion are way outside your mental paradigm that english languaged doesn't even reflect it very well.
I'm not saying that out of arrogance, I'm saying that because of the blogs with other Jews I'm talking to, who have the same problem, and therfore half thier posts are in a bad hebrew/english mix.
The issue with the stem cell thing, is that most people don't bother to -explain- thier morality. They have never had to do so before in History, so why should they think they have to do so now.
There are non religious arguments that people who believe in religion could make, they just don't care enough about athiests to bother doing so, since they are not trying to convince 16% of the planet but rather 51% of the planet.

Okay, Daganev, I am going to JIHAD YOUR ARSE.
Did you just say the X-Men powers are MAGICAL? You need a SPANKING with the CLUE STICK.

If you want to argue about religion with someone, you'd be better off sitting yourself down in front of a wall and listing out your points. That's basically what a religious argument is.

Quoted for truth. Although, even though it's not going to change anyone's opinion, it might be amusing or enlightening if you have idiotic or intelligent enough people, respectively.
Sylphas2006-07-21 19:10:10
Veonira has it just about right. The only productive arguments you can have are with agnostics or people who mostly agree with you already.
Also, I have to back Verithrax. Say what you want about religion and such, Dag, but the X-Men sure as hell aren't magical.

Verithrax, please explain to me how my genetic stucture allows me to suddenly teleport.... They are CLEARLY magical.
Oh right, and how can a telepath learn to fly and breathe in space, and then turn into a giant firey eagle...
Please, explain the science behind it.

Verithrax2006-07-21 19:13:46
Are you insane? DEFINE "MAGICAL".
Sylphas2006-07-21 19:16:37
Daganev, it's a comic book. Suspension of disbelief. They're not magical because in the Marvel universe, genetics can do that.

I don't think he knows how to play along. It's scary.
EDIT: Why do my single spaces keep turning into triple spaces.
