I want to hear you explain that its not magic...
Verithrax2006-07-21 19:23:34
Why? Are you afraid of something? Are you afraid we'll reveal... the Ugly Truth??
Alright, Daganev. Genes control the production of proteins. It is conceivable that some proteins could interact with the fabric of the universe or the subject's bodily processes in bizarre and ill-understood ways.
There? Happy now?

I don't think he knows how to play along. It's scary.
EDIT: Why do my single spaces keep turning into triple spaces.
I think you mean, "I don't think he takes anything seriously"

No, I just want to know what science allows genetic changes in a person to make teleportation possible.
Diamondais2006-07-21 19:26:57
X-men were not magical Daganev, they were natural mutations (except for Wolverine, he was made) that had happened in the human race. While mutations of that scale are not currently happening, it is a common bit in the Human genes. We are different than those of 2 thousand years ago, as well our descendants be from us 2 thousand years in the future.
Verithrax2006-07-21 19:28:01
I was replying to Archer or whomever it was with that 'ugly truth' bit.

Not bad, I like the quatuam mechanics answer better.
Hmm, now what makes one able to steal another's powers and what makes one able to prevent another's powers from working?

One protien's metabolic reation is able to suppress the reations of another protien?

From a range?
Remember, Beast walked into the area, and suddenly he has normal skin color, and Juggernaut suddenly lost his momentum.
Best answer I heard was that even though mutant genes all express themselves differently, they all have a common property, and some people exhert a magnetic field which makes the X-gene become discconected from the rest of the biology.
But even that goes against science, because your not going to "revert back". Thats clasic magic.. once the spell breaks, everything goes back to "normal"

Please tell me you have knowledge beyond the movie. Please please please.
Also, the Marvel universe is NOT our world. It appears similar in many, many ways, but it isn't. Whatever the writers say happens is what happens.

No, it's called fiction.

nope, I've also watched the animated series based on the movie.

Sci-fi has to be explainable, Fantasy just has to be consistant.
Diamondais2006-07-21 19:52:12
I cant believe were arguing about X-men, it has been explained why things were so. Leave it be!
Unknown2006-07-21 19:59:11
Reading this thread made me stupider. Now I hate you all.
Sylphas2006-07-21 20:45:50
Sci-fi has to -appear- explainable. Star Wars has whole books on how the tech works. But it doesn't ACTUALLY work, or we'd have blasters and shit now. They fall back on using minerals and gases that we don't have, and explain it away that way.
The X-Men were created to make money and sell comic books. No one cared about explaining it back then, "they're mutants" was enough. Trying to explain it now scientifically is going to be difficult, because the foundation wasn't truly made to explain it.

Its very easy to explain when you call it Magic.
Diamondais2006-07-21 20:57:10
But it isnt magic. Its mutations.
edit: Or its stuff we havent invented yet. Just because we dont have it now doesnt means its automatically magic.

Actually the foundaition of comic books do have the backing of science to explain them.
Its only the later stories which become more nad more fancifull that become harder to explain.
Superman for example, only use to be able to jump really high, not fly, because of the change in gravity.
The original xmen had more easily explainable powers like, super healing, power over different "elements", simple telepathy, all things that were more believable with the bizzare understanding of radioactive material and atomic theory.
When I say backing of science, I mean, you could explain it away like you can explain star wars, or star trek.

Ugh youre impossible! Stop changing your arguement! You talk about consistancy and then just drop off it! Bahhhh!!
Daganev2006-07-21 21:17:38
in the old days it was science, now its just magic..
You just need to learn how to resolve contradiction
