The broadswords, longswords and other medieval implements can be justified by the Basin's mock-medieval setting. However, where do the Katana come from?
Is there some Eastern land that the communes and cities originally imported from? I'm thinking of the story ramifications of making a warrior that adheres to Bushido, and where I can draw the line.

The katana is merely a name for a slender, fast two-handed sword.
There is no bushido in Lusternia. You could make a personal code of honor that's similiar, but no bushido for you.

Actually, I believe the Katana, was created by Shikari, or Fain.
Unknown2006-07-24 02:16:04
Katana itself is a Japanese term, though. If they just wanted it to be a "slender two-handed sword", there's dozens of variations of such in European history.
I'm clinging to the belief that the Katana was put in the game for reasons besides, "lolanimesowrd!!!" is all.

the katana is familiar to people though, and i'm guessing that is why it was put in. The katana doesn't have very many equals in European history, as a one-sided, slightly curved long sword.
Though, really, the katana wasn't even a solely two-handed weapon.. but that's another issue all together
Daganev2006-07-24 02:20:57
What other swords with European names look like a katana?
But now that I think about it, it was Shikari who introduced the Katana with all those weapons on him.

Lusternia is not medieval, though many things in it may have been drawn from medieval themes. Lusternia is Lusternia, and it can have katanas as easily as it can have rapiers and scimitars. As for why they picked 'katana', it is a widely known term and thus fits much better than a more obscure equivalent.
Estarra2006-07-24 02:52:17
I always thought 'katana' sounded like a dracnari word....

there was such thing as a rather exceptionally long-handled variant of the katana, I forget what it was called, specifically designed for disemboweling maneuvers since you could get more leverage to cleave through armour with the longer handle, not to mention make a sweet upwards slash
And anyways, katanas are shiny. They come from the big shiny in the sky and they makes us happy, yes they do.

The scimitar isn't European, and yet it's in the game.
Unknown2006-07-24 13:16:35
Scimitars are Dracnari designed ICly too. I guess they just make all eastern things (middle east or far east, doesn't matter), despite being in the west.
EDIT: And please don't degenerate this thread into katana-praising by fanbois, on how extremely sharp and uber these weapons are/were. They're not (compared to SOLIDLY made european weaponry, and not some cheap crap), and I will verbally abuse anyone who will try to state something else.

All the same, gotta love it

I didn't even know we had katanas...
I think the popularity of the katana though is a bane on western fantasy..
It has culminated in that stupid drawing of a dwarf in full plate mail wielding a katana... I always thought the idea of thw dwarf prefering a weapon that would never ever damage his own armor kind of funny.
ANd yes, to the fanbois, Katana's would not cut through steel, or even blending iron armor... that is why the European's moved to stabing and beating to a pulp weapons. Even the old slashing swords got thicker and the flat of the sword was used more then the edge. Also, Katana's are extordinarly fragile... -shrug-
Time ot be flamed by people who accept the katana as the penultimate in swordcraft...

Yeah, katanas are based on a whole different culture and a differentle style of combat.
Unknown2006-07-24 15:03:20
Actually I hate katana's and scimitars too... I like them long and straight to stab folks.... wow that sounded dirty.

Katanas are -not- the ultimate, penultimate, or even third ultimate in swordcraft. They're brittle, incapable of cutting heavy armour, and are difficult to use if one is wearing said heavy armour. I know that. I did not say that they were the best, merely that they were shiny and that I like, both of which happen to (usually) be true.

Guess, I was wrong.
However, Shikari did have that Katana in his Sig, and he did have all those wierd weapons on him.
But it makes sense that everything "eastern" would come from the same culture as Dairuchi.
