Not sure if anyone's posted about this but I didn't see any recently.

The jist is that cable/phone companies would like to limit how we access the internet. It's been a work in progress for some time now and is starting to surface a bit more thanks to people circulating the links in forums and through email.

If you'd like you can visit This Site and sign the petition and send a letter to your congressperson and senators.

Been there, done that, in a long thread in which I verbally pwned Daganev several times (I'm infallible). Sorry.
Unknown2006-07-26 17:22:39
Far from infallible. tongue.gif but, yeah Verithrax PWNed Daganev in this tongue.gif
Verithrax2006-07-26 17:32:34
I'm a pope, I can claim infallibility anytime.

Nice job perk.
Daganev2006-07-26 20:01:00
Nonsense.

All you did was prove that you believe in large cooperation consiparcy theories reported to you buy a group of large cooperations.

There is currently, no such thing as net neutrality, so you can't preserve it.
Hazar2006-07-26 20:02:51
But we can keep close to neutrality, rather than veer away from it.

What proof do you have that anyone is trying to veer away from it?

The only thing we know is that comcast asked Google to help pay for bigger pipelines to support Google video and HDtv.
Sylphas2006-07-26 22:06:25
If Comcast wants bigger pipes because of Google Video and HDTV, it's because their users are using a lot bandwidth on those. If they need more money for equipment, charge their users more. It is the only option that makes sense. If you're a museum who's getting a ton of people in for an exhibit, and you need to pay staff overtime to work during those times, do you charge the artist for the overtime? Hell no.

Google is Comcast's costumer.

This is why google is now opening up plants in Oregon and Michigan.

Why is this so complicated?

If I use Verizon, how is comcast going to charge me?
Sylphas2006-07-26 22:25:02
Google pays for the bandwidth it uses. You pay for the bandwitdh you use. Why should Google pay for both?
Daganev2006-07-27 00:36:51
Why do stores have to pay sales tax?

I pay for the food I eat, and so does the store I eat it in.
Diamondais2006-07-27 00:38:10
Probably because they buy the ingrediants and raw foods that you eat.

I wish I could think of an analogy to demonstrate the idiocy of analogies, but I don't want to step into that cesspit of irony.
Daganev2006-07-27 01:02:34
Ok, here... the reason why companies pay sales tax is because the government feels that they deserve money from each of your sales to help maintain the infustructure that allows you to have a business open to sell food in the first place.

The reason why google should pay comcast when I acess the page, and when they give out the page is because Google makes money from me visting thier site, and if comcast didn't upgrade the pipelines, Google wouldn't have a business to run in the first place.

It wasn't an anology... I was hoping that people knew the basic concept behind taxes.

Analogies are stupid, it would be like if you were trying to fit a square peg in a round whole.

That help quid?

I hate analogies. Everyone gets so mixed up correcting each other's analogies that they forget what they were talking about in the first place.
Daganev2006-07-27 01:05:31
I hate the lack of analogies, you have to waste too much time going over basics.
Shiri2006-07-27 02:13:23
Yes, but EDIT: some people's analogies are screwed up roughly 75% of the time so everyone just gets confused and have to re-explain the basics anyway.
Unknown2006-07-27 03:00:31
A better, "high quality" internet!

Hell yeah, I'd pay.
