Dross power

Back to Common Grounds.

Yes, you've said that. It still doesn't help make your point. The game should not cater to alts you trans out common skills before they leave novicehood.

If they do, they're a very, very small minority, and most definitely not a new player.

So just because I don't follow your IC rules, I shouldn't be allowed to use the 5,000 credits I bought? There is already a limitation on being part of the org in the first place.

When power only came from the effort of players, it made sense to not allow some new guy to just use all the power, but now that the power is "left overs" and always exists, it seems really petty to be mad that people are able to have power.

I'd like to see a merian Geomancer kick ass.
Merians' Intelligence + astrology spheres + Blessing of Knowledge + Geo Staff = ownage.

Amusing...

Merian only have 1 more intelligence than Master Viscanti, and four less constitution. They'd be alright offensively as Geomancers, but they'd be extremely frail and far from 'ownage'.

I agree with Daganev's description of dross power being the dregs of the nexus, but it ought to reflect that. Maybe lower it to 10% (10 power plus 5%), or make it so you can only fill your active power supply from it and not your reserves, so it's just sort of a quick fix.
Sylphas2006-07-30 19:44:47
My only real problem is that people who are powerblocked can draw power. I'd be absolutely fine with novices not being powerblocked at all, and able to draw normally.

I'd love if you could only fill your active power from it, and limit it to 5% drawn a day. Enough to get by with, especially as a novice, but definitely not something you want to be your only source of power. I mean, I can get by easily on 13 power a day, if I'm just bashing and harvesting, and that's with Drawdown. But I can't fight with that, and I can't spore around a bunch, and I can't summon all my fae. It feels very limiting to use only that much, but you can get by on it, even with trans skills.
Callus2006-07-30 21:22:56
It just feels like the Gods didn't even think about the fact that this makes powerblocking obsolete. Sure, it doesn't -directly- drain the Pool's power, but the point of powerblocking is denying the person -any- power from the Nexus.

If they did think about it, then... I feel like they've done a great wrong. :S Like, power is now gratis.
Daganev2006-07-30 21:26:17
The point of powerblocking was to prevent people from sucking up all the power for themselves without putting in any effort to replenish the power....

That's the purpose we put it to, generally.

It also had a purpose of being a punishment, which is no longer possible (they just have a cap of 30 power a month if they're being punished).

I have to say that I mostly agree with your reasons, though I do not agree with your reason for removing them. tongue.gif It's not generally a bad thing, and it WILL still be a punishment to the people who are most likely to earn a powerblocking.
Callus2006-07-30 21:33:26
Aww. smile.gif We respect your opinion, Soll.

Some extremists might trace you down and kill you, but we respect your opinion. tongue.gif

Except, someone who was powerblocked could always buy power from others, or steal it (in the case of Necro users), or jump up to Astral, or summon one of the Nodes if they're particularly desperate.

Plus, if someone is over drawing constantly enough to keep them powerblocked for a long ammount of time, 15% a month is obviously not enough to let them do what they think it is they need to do with the power anyway.

Until, you know, they get punished because they're not allowed to draw from the Megalith.

Will be interesting to see if Fain decides that Dross doesn't count as "real power", seeing it as slimy or dirty power only fit for a Merian or Elf.

The very fact that they are calling this dross suggests it can get around those restrictions, with approval from the deity who this law is based upon.

We will see.
Vix2006-07-30 22:26:06
I still don't get the "almost unlimited" part. Is it limitless or not? Is it based on the amount of power stored in the nexus?
Soll2006-07-30 22:27:24
I'm pretty sure that Estarra just means it won't run out very easily atall, if ever. It just wouldn't be very conducive to say that there's an infinite amount of it. I think we should just take from 'almost infinite' that there's enough for us to use without worrying about it running dry.

It means that you're siphoning off such an insignificant amount of power that it would be almost impossible to run out. You're just kind of skimming some excess power from the edges of the nexus, if that makes any sense.
Tervic2006-07-30 22:41:13
I really hope this doesn't result in everyone in the Basin being powerblocked and thus forced to use dross so that power-hungry nations can fill up their nexus that much faster.....

There should be at least -some- kind of penalty to the city for using dross power.....

There is. You can't have more than 15% reserves.

For an active fighter, that is a HUGE penalty.

I value Soll's opinion a lot more than most people's. wub.gif

@topic: Here's an idea: allow Power aides to block people from dross power too. One command to block from the nexus, and another to block from nexus and dross. For example:

CODE

nexus power block Rauros
You block Rauros from accessing power from your nexus.

nexus dross block Rauros
You block Rauros from accessing power from your nexus and from your dross nexus. (To prevent having to need to do both commands)
