Having heard a lot of good about the series, I finally had the opportunity to see its first episode. I've heard it's not the best of the series, but I liked it anyway. The presented world manages to be both interesting and (to an extent) believable, characters have distinct and vibrant personalities, and the special effects are nice. Also like the comic relief. Looking forward to seeing more, oh yes. Definately.

Mal's prank on Simon. Mean.

Okay, keep this spoiler free, as per topic.

Firefly is one of my favorite shows... unfortunately, Fox really did a number on it.

The pilot was very well done, but Fox decided they didn't like it, so had Joss (one of the writer's) come up with a new script over the weekend, and so he did, for what became the new "first episode", which is the train heist. So they pointlessly recapped some stuff, and so much other stuff was left out. The original pilot wasn't shown until the show was already canceled.

That, and they made him keep changing Mal's character. In the original pilot they thought he was too grim and not friendly enough (which was the point, he was supposed to open up as the series progressed thanks in part of his struggles with River), and so his character fluctuates over the first couple episodes due to Fox's insessent bitching.

Its really sad, because it would have been such an incredible show, but studio execs decided to stick their nose in over and over again, and then not even give the show a full season to develop.

Yeah its a great show, I have the series on dvd. It's a rip-roaring good time... its funny, dramatic, action-packed, etc. The show had a really high production value, which is one of the reasons it was cancelled sadly. I thought just not enough people were watching. I never heard about Fox changing actual characters. For what it was, its still a great show, and still a great series. They at least tied it all up with a movie. Jane was always my favorite char ninja.gif

Yeah. Joss talks about it in the commentaries. Fox made them jump a lot of hoops. Its too bad the show didn't start its life on Sci-Fi, like BSG. It probably would still be around today if it had.

Joss even wanted to do the whole show in widescreen (which is what the pilot is done in) to give the show a more spacious, empty feel, but again Fox got bitchy about it.

Stupid corporate people.

Sadly, I didn't get into Firefly until after it got canceled. I must concur with all previously stated points though.

Here's to hoping Joss does a second movie.

Yeah, neither did I. I started watching it on Sci-Fi just before the movie came out. I saw the movie, and fell in love, at which point I went out and bought the DVD set.

I'd really hope he does another movie, even if its a sci-fi movie (since they do have good quality with BSG, Farscape, and the SGs)

But the story for the movie could have been so amazing if it was stretched out over an entire season or more like it was supposed to be.

River is so awesome. wub.gif Her gracefulness is always what amazes me in the movie. Especially knowing that she did all her own stunts and they filmed the fight sequences in single takes thanks to her dancing talent.

Isn't it Jayn? Ah well, he has the big shinies by his bed, so 'sall good, but it's River who my fote for favorite character goes to. Yay insane uberninja.

And my favorite episode was "Objects in Space" which was also sadly the last official episode, if memory serves correctly. I keep hoping that they'll either make more movies or restart the series, but I don't think studio execs who are only interested in lining their wallets are concerned about what this small band of fans is interested in and so they shall let Firefly die a mostly unsastisfyingly finished death.

Does that seem right to you?

Saw the movie, never saw the show.
Unknown2006-07-30 22:57:55
oh man gotta see the show, movie is pointless otherwise
Sylphas2006-07-31 01:11:17
Small band of fans? There were enough to get a movie made, that's not a few.

And now that she has been on TV you can't go hey I am friends with her give me her number to her agent. It doesn't work that well....
