In other words, before anyone actually saw the film, based on the reputation of the website crank call abilities, and hype (i.e. drinking koolaide) people decided they found the new thing to waste thier money on and declared it the best thing ever.

Of course, that's kind of the point, why it's so interesting. The studio really didn't market it, and if rumours are to be believed, would have brought it out as uninteresting crap if none of the 'net hype had happened. You can't really try and do this, or you're going to fail. You just have to get lucky, and hit a nerve with the culture.

You arn't suspicious that weeks before the movie came out, TV news stations which are owned by the same company as the movie studio were saying that this movie was going to be "a surprise hit" because of blogs?

I'm as cynical as the next guy, but I can't believe it for this. Maybe they did, but it was done pretty damn well if so, and they deserve credit for it in that case. *shrug*
