Alright. I can't fall asleep so I'm going to post some videos. These are groups that I like and I bet you haven't heard some of them. I really enjoy the sound and has really shapped one side of my musical self. Yeah, no Emo stuff. What I like are really great and wierd sounds, so check it out
Sigur Ros - Makes me feel all giddy inside.. Sigur Ros is a band from Iceland that plays some nice medolic music. Can't think of anything similar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raLcrak7_3Y
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBoZmTqiw6I
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3Iqq1AWMTQI
http://youtube.com/watch?v=P0AZIFmkogY
Dresden Dolls - Imagine a girl pumped up with PMS but strangely not bitchy and screamy, instead she got it all bottled up. Add in a Piano, some drums and a really f'ed up live... oh, and they look like mimes and actually.. are entretainers
http://youtube.com/watch?v=P0AZIFmkogY
http://youtube.com/watch?v=P0AZIFmkogY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUEP-VKK-x4
Muse - Really good band. Brittish. Kind of like Radiohead without Tom Yorke's crazyness and with more rock. Electronic rock.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0dw0cB23Jo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_WmoCAD6KY
Block Party - Also brittish band. Really pop-esque but extremly good. Indie-rock and Indie-punk... not Emo punk, but the good ol' brittish kind of punk. In my opinion, they had the best album of 2005.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w7ACK7HTqw

Arcade Fire - .. they don't require no explanation. They made one of the best albums I've ever heard. Just listen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ild9uc6Y5oA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1F1CZP_Qao
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ5EL4iaDTA
+/-(Plus Minus) - Well, this is practically a smal band in New York. Nobodies. They rock so hard. I'm seriously suprised why no one big have catched them. When I heard them I thought I was hearing some good pop-inde-prog band. Some one new with a good label. Turns out they were really independant. Which suprised me because small labels tend to have crappy sound.

The quality of the sound is nothing like what I have on my home which sounds really good. But still, they rock

Slapshock - one of Philippine's rockbands, they're hardcore and will do anything to bring down the house!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SskHJSTLeF4
http://www.bolt.com/Lightzout/audio/545991
Rivermaya - one of Philippine's oldest bands (I've known around 13 years ago) Mostly their song comes with meaning and being sentimental and such.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9lAgwGElq4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1ElBBwg8D4
MYMP (Make Your Momma/Mother Proud) - this band came around 3-4 years ago and their songs are for those who like love/sentimental/emotional songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJEvnsPKXEg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYBKqNy2jVk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFEnkdfen94
aaaaand my personal song translated from a Tagalog (Philippine Language) song, Ako'y Sayo meaning 'I'm yours', now I'm not that all good and anything alright, I was just inspired that time to make one for my GF last year during Valentine's Day

I hate Dresden Dolls. She scares me.
Unknown2006-08-05 18:17:57
She's scary, but my brother says she doesn't bite and she's quite cool in person...
And Lightzout, don't get me wrong, but I don't like pop music
the Metal band is nice, tho
And Britttttitsh is spelled with as many t's as I feel like

Mountain Goats are nice. Haven't heard the others, except fot the Thermals, which they are ok, but too punkish too my taste
EDIT
Just listened some Stufjan Stevens, he's very folk indie-pop. It's the kind of music I would listen on "Garden State." Quite good.
Built to Spill are really good. Reminds me of Modest mouse(Pre "Good news to people who like bad news") but more melodic.. I'm going to look more of them
Against Me!.... I don't really like it

The Smashing Pumpkins and Billy Corgan will always hold a special place in my heart, as will Robert Smith and the Cure as well. I also am partial to anything by Clapton or B.B King (I maintain that these two are better than Hendrix).
this was my favorite video as a kid: http://youtube.com/watch?v=fZ2osNmKvNc
It wasn't anything special. It wasn't anything glamerous. It was just awesome.
this is my favorite now:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=u3D4_ljnjqo
I used to be an Indie fan, however many Indie groups are gross sell outs (making poor quality music in the name of staying Indie and trashing anyone who tries to make it big), and largely sound the same these days.
However, I had heard of almost every indie band listed. But then Popular Music is my hobby.

Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, Pre-Black disc Metallica, Nirvana, Pearl Jam... those bands I grew up with... some of them I listened as a little boy to sleep... When MTV rocked and played more rock music
I remember that my brother used to put Master of Puppets cassette and I would just stay there and listen to the music to sleep. Yeah, I grew up with Metal and later, Grunge
That was just a little bit of what I like... there are many many others I enjoy listening.
Also, you can identify sell outs by a mile... and also those who just sell out ( Modest Mouse )
Perhaps my favorite type of music is actually dream pop. Very loud and smooth music.

SUFJAN IS AWESOME. Also check out Beirut and Slow Club (look for an MP3 blog called take your medicine to get slow club mp3s, they are <3). For sufjan, listen to the whole album Illinois. Its pretty much the most amazing thing ever.
Mountaint goats are awesome. I like thermals and against me, prolly cause my roots are in punk/hardcore punk, so eh. Built to spill are AMAZING: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6omZ5GsuGrI is my friends music video he made for "Car". Great song.
Okay - Selling out is a rather ironic subject. People don't like music because it sells out, but then its like they don't even consider the music itself, just the ideal behind it (or lack of ideal, rather). Personally, I think in judging weather music will be good, you shouldn't even consider it. If there are good songs on the cd, why should anyone care if they sold out? For Punk fans out there, "...And Out Come the Wolves...", anyone? (by rancid).
Ok. Taste as a whole: While I detest people who say they listen to everything, I try to at least give everything I hear a shot, and listen to a wide variety of music. By no means all inclusive, but here goes:
Hiphop/Rap - Deltron 3030, Aesop Rock, A Tribe Called Quest
Indie stuff - as above
Punk - Operation Ivy, Rancid, Some Dead kennedys (not so much lately), Ramones.
Disney music - Super good, believe it or not. Big fan of the lion king and beauty and the beast. Under the Sea is an amazing song as well.
Electronic - Prodigy (not really in this catagory but oh well), Chemical Brothers, Infected Mushroom, and Overclocked Remixes!!!!
Ska - Pretty much everything, lots of 90s and second wave stuff, a little first wave.
Jazz - Big Band Swing, and some newer small stuff. Most of my collection is from the 30s-60s (Ellington, Louis, Ella, Dexter Gorden, LINCOLN CENTER JAZZ ENSEMBLE!!!, Wycliffe Gorden, Charlie Parker, ETC)
Metal/Hardcore - Bloodbrothers and Inflames, a somewhat local band called Powerglove which does Nintendo covers amazingly well (check out their myspace... www.myspace.com/powerglove I think), Devil in the Kitchen (a local band as well, I know most of the band, they are cool).
New Wave Swing/Rockabilly - Stray Cats, Cherry Poppin Daddies.
Random other stuff - Adventure Time, Pleasure Forever, Minutemen, Violent Femmes.
Woooo.

want to really boarden your horizons?
how about a little taste of Cumbia and Norteño music from the north of mexico, with a touch of Rock-hip hop...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWWrGtIVLtY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61xKNfhhdcY
that was 6 years ago.
and this is Huapango, different. A type of music that mixtures Polka and other influences. Quite common in south Texas, but it originated in the Tamaulipas/San Luis Potosi region in mexico, which is 6 hours south of the border. I really like to dance it. In fact, it's really popular in this region and it's the type of music that almost everyone dances

When will people realize that making it big and getting a good record deal is not selling out. It's when it becomes more about the money and less about the music that you've sold out ie: RHCP. Modest Mouse retained their creative control, they are not sell outs. The indie scene has largely lost its way in my opinion and need to re-realize that scoring gigs at Lollapalooza and Woodstock or getting onto labels such as Reprise and Epic are part of the dream. Its about creativity and integrity, not staying broke. Perhaps Modest Mouse knows this and that's why they titled their new CD "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank" in response to the many indy fans who think they sold out.
Regarding ...And Out Come the Wolves. For the love of all that is Punk listen to a Clash album (If you haven't heard London Calling, run into a wall) and readjust your line of thinking. In fact, the album title itself is a statement to all the big labels who wanted to take control away from the band.
Punk fans should check out The Specials and The Stooges if they haven't already (I'm assuming you've got the essential four under your belt already).

(Still, the best progressive rock song ever, and this live version is actually better than the recorded one from the album.)

I hate how people say "Oh punk? clash! Woo!" A lot of clash stuff is in no way punk, I'm sorry. Punk is about selling out, funnily... Lots of people consider the sex pistols to be the first big big punk band, and they were started not to make music, but to advertise JEANS!!! WOO!!!.
Specials are ska, not punk, really. I endorse them for different reasons.
The Stooges are amazing, yes.
Just for my curiosity, what are the essential four? For the absolute essentials, I usually only think of 3 bands...
