Apathy: Works a bit like stupidity in that sometimes a command will be stopped and a message sent to the character instead. Ex:
eat chervil
You eye a bit of chervil apathetically and drop it.
swing daedalion
You insult Daedalion half-heartedly, not bothering to even lift your weapon.

How would that be any different than stupidity other than cosmetically?
Ghaloaire2006-11-22 07:28:30
In that you sometimes drop herbs instead of eating them. I thought it was an interesting affliction that someone could draw an idea from later, not something that should be put in the game immediately (if at all).

It would also always be in effect until cured, unlike stupidity which is random. It would stop certain activities, not confuse commands. Activities like: moving, flying, eating, drinking, applying, offensive actions... or just pretty much everything .
It's different that stupidity, and it doesn't sound bad for an affliction.

So, it's stupidity with a 100% proc rate? Meaning, an afflict that prevents you from doing anything at all? How do you cure something that makes 100% of all commands fail? Or do you just... stop caring... and go sleep... or something. Or not, whatever.

You'd get a message, so you could identify and trigger it.
I wasn't serious about stopping everything.
I'm not saying it's the idea of the year, just that it's not bad and could work.

How about an affliction to make casters miss?
Something like, "disoriented":
2927h, 3486m, 3992e, 10p ex-abjure cosmicfire rat
Your mind is filled with a hazy fog, preventing you from seeing a young rat.
Your attack harmlessly whooshes past him.
2927h, 3406m, 3992e, 10p x-
A young rat timidly bashes you.
2877h, 3406m, 3992e, 10p x-
You have recovered equilibrium.
2877h, 3406m, 3992e, 10p x-
It could be bard affliction or something, seeing as they don't have much right now and I've heard they're really squishy.

Make casters miss when bashing??

Erm, no.
It was just an example, it would affect both PvE and PvP... although bashing to a lesser extent, since you wouldn't leave it uncured and skip off to go ratting.
Ildaudid2006-12-08 14:16:18
Heh, that makes sense

From something that Roark said, I believe this to be impossible to code. We had an idea relatively similar to this, and it was rejected for that reason.

In that case if your looking for something like that, an affliction which makes magic based damage do less, think of it like this when afflicted and you try to cast a spell, when the spell checks the formula to do damage, it looks at the damage source, ie magic, it then checks the affliction and reduces your the score in a reverse effect to how when it checks your score and increases the damage due to int.
I'm not sure if I explained that well.

Hrm, that wouldn't be hard to do I don't think, but is it worthwhile? The affliction can be cured, remember, and casters don't attack with damage attacks constantly. I know I only hit with point cudgel after the target is saplocked, and the damage from my demesne is laughable already (except in a sap lock).
So, the afflict either needs to have a secondary component to it, be a very significant decrease, or maybe be a song effect instead of an afflict.
ferlas2006-12-08 17:14:23
Sure it's worth while, if you could stick something like that to cut down the aqua staff or a telepaths blast/burst then it'd be great to do at the time. Sure it isn't going to be the best thing to do on everyone but still it has uses.
Tzekelkan2006-12-08 17:53:10
Making it into a song effect would mean giving it to a specialisation, which would in turn mean giving it to only one org... which would invariably flood the forums with yelps of, "Overpowered!"
And too bad for it being impossible to code... how about this:
A masked affliction that would make attacking with damage impossible until cured. Like, instead of a more-or-less small chance to miss, a 100% chance to "miss". Think of it as a sort of timeslip... but as an affliction instead of a defense. I afflict you with it and you try to attack, it gives a message saying that you missed, and you eat something to cure it.
Alternatively, it could be uncurable, but a one-time-only effect, just like timeslip, that would trigger on your next non-passive damage attack.
EDIT: And about that masked part... it would be better to be able to at least pair it with another affliction, or it wouldn't be too much of a hassle to cure it as far as I understand bards at the moment.

Isn't Mindblast not magical source, but somehow based on ego? I could be completely wrong, but I thought the damage wasn't effected by int.

What are you talking about? Necroscream has a song that gives cutting/blunt defence. Are people screaming "OP! OP!"? No. Having a song in a spec that gives undeaf enemeis -10% or -20% magical source damage isn't OP at all, if you ask me.

Between Timeslip, Avoid, and Reflections already existing, I don't really see this being unique... It would have to fire on all aggressive acts or all weapon swings for it to be codable easily (from what I understand). It would ignore how long the effect normally took to recover, and have a set recovery time, if you mean for the missed skill to cause balance loss. If you don't mean for that, then isn't it just amnesia with a new name? If you do mean that, than it would be overly powerful against psions, and against stuff like Dissolve, Puncture Aura, order entourage attack, etc, things that normally don't take balance, or take very little (under a second).

Well, it all depends on percentage, I guess. I assumed that if Ferlas suggested an affliction inspired from mine, it would drastically reduce the damage. If it was just a -10% or -20% reduction, you're right - it wouldn't be overpowered.

Erm, yeah, that's why I suggested it to work only for damage attacks, not every aggressive action. Also, I don't know anything about how hard it would be to code, so I'm just brainstorming. And I meant it would have a balance time so spamming the command wouldn't work (unlike the case of stupidity, for example).
And it would have been unique...ish for being an affliction, not a defense. Hey, I don't know all afflictions out there, but it's worth a try. I might inspire someone to have a better idea!

But I'm allowed to defend the ideas, right?
