Aethereal map art

Heh. The 'Here Be Tentacles' is a play on 'Here Be Dragons' - You'll notice the original map has a gap where the text is.
Unknown2006-09-01 22:51:24
Psh, there actually -are- dragons in prime aetherspace. (Which no-one really sticks around long enough to look at... but still, they're there!)

I think the unique creatures for cosmic are starbeasts and... whatever the Nil equivalent is. Or something like that.
Verithrax2006-09-01 22:59:05
Still...

TENTACLESSS.

EDIT: Also, the reason dragons were used is that, in medieval times, the scariest thing you can think of is a dragon. In Lusternia, the scariest thing you can think of is Kethuru.

Now I'm sad... only ethereal looks like "something"... Elemental might look like an upside down mamoth, but what does that have to do with elements?

You were expecting aetherspace to form pictures????

secret.gif Well, hmm, I think Elemental looks llike a glob of muddy dirt contemplating an attack upon a graceful drop of water diving through the aethers....

Ethereal does! It's a squirrel with a nut!
Verithrax2006-09-02 00:57:11
Rorshach Aether?

Ahem, what are the critters you can find in all the Astral spheres? I need inspiration for the map symbols on Astral (Don't worry - I'll provide a legend this time).
Unknown2006-09-03 05:58:29
I say use each astrological sign for it..

and Verithrax, you roxxors

Try to make a legend for each colour please smile.gif
Verithrax2006-09-03 13:19:45
Those Astral symbols are hard to draw, and being clearly intelligible isn't really my style.
Unknown2006-09-03 15:49:08
I'm surprised...

No one thinks the aetheric water plane looks like sperm? ohmy.gif

And I'll keep to myself what the earth plane looks like...
Verithrax2006-09-03 16:39:26
Astral (Warning: Large image).
Shyshaeia2006-09-03 22:55:51
Well Astral is shaped like the Orion constelation, right?
Unknown2006-09-04 23:51:12
Why mapping prime is gonna take a while, and likely quite a few implosions...

Put up my map on your website already...

And for mapping, I suggest you find someone with a really small ship.

Ok! Uploaded and added, looks great! (Oops, I sort of went... "I'll do that later" and promptly forgot about it. Sorry!)

As for the ship, I have a one-room ship, but I need the size and viewrange of Avaerin. Particularly for large empty areas I have to keep pausing and checking whether I've missed anything and left gaps in the map, and having a large hull-strength means I can do that.

Do we not have any actuall, well, mapping for aetherspace? As in, boxes and lines to show rooms and exits.

Or is aetherspace just ridiculously huge, and each of those boxes are rooms? :S

that is how you actually see Aetherspace. Only you see a 20 by 20 square of it.

Just to let you know how big it is. In the first post, the little red eye of the squirrel, has a ? sign in it. That's how big it is

Oh. O.O I see...

Must be a terror to navigate! Thanks. smile.gif

Well, it took me a lot longer than I expected (until specs came out, then it took a LOT less than I anticipated)... but it's finally done!

The new prime aetherspace map is here!!! (Hopefully my server doesn't crash unsure.gif)

Anyone who wants to make a nice graphical version, please go ahead!

(Interesting sidenote: Glomdoring has no vortex outside their dock, unlike all the other nations. sad.gif )
Unknown2006-09-27 16:21:05
I'm not trying to be offensive, the maps are great but I can figure them out like I can figure out Japanese writing..

They all look like masses of color (in the case of Ethereal it's a Squrriel) but... WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!

All the different colors, and Extraction point things and swirlies and Tentaclessss and Dragons and gawd! What the heck does it all mean?!

And I want to be an Aethership captain too... Guess maybe I should be ditching that dream soon...

Edit:
Bah I'm such a n00b. Just read this post

QUOTE(Avaer @ Aug 24 2006, 07:59 PM) 323830

Oops. Avaerin Aether Cartography

As requested, the descriptions that correspond to each colour on the map -

green = Meandering the ethereal.
Strange shadowy figures swim within the emerald clouds that glitter throughout the space here. As
the aethership skims near each cloud, occasionally the silhouettes come into focus as trees,
flowers, and even dancing fae.

red = Lurching through dimensional shifts.
As the dimensional walls between worlds thin, the aetheric currents here continuously solidify and
dissolve as competing realities assert themselves. The aetherspace itself is cloudy and viscous,
making aethership movement slow and cumbersome.

yellow = Fighting the temporal storms.
Howling streaks of colour buffet the aethership, as it struggles to maintain balance amidst the
temporal storms that whip dangerously around its hull. Small islands of stillness are few and far
away in this tempestuous roiling mass of energy.

Anything with a cross in it (that looks pinky or blackish on the small version) is a solid wall.

Also, from HELP AETHERSPACE ENVIRONMENTS -

When traveling through the aetherways in an aethership, there are several types
of environments that one could encounter. Some environments could slow down the
speed of the aethership while other environments may even increase the speed.
Some of the comment environments:

Flux: Dimensional flux is the most common environment of aetherspace. (purple - moderately fast)

Shift: Dimensional shifts usually indicate that realities are forming, either
from aether bubbles or planes of existence. (red - uberslow)

Slipstream: Slipstreams are the favorite environment of most aethership
captains, as traveling is much faster. (white - uberfast)

Tempest: Aether tempests are quite common, especially near dimensional shifts. (yellow - medium)

Aether: The outer most reaches of aetherspace is simply the aether, which
borders upon the Void itself. (cyan I think, dragon/death territory)
