Guard stations

I had an idea today about posting guards in manses. Now people are probably thinking, what kind of stupid idea has he come up with now, that will in the long run only benefit himself?

Ha!

Actually, I can't benefit from this idea at all, so let's proceed...

There are some manses that are city/commune manses, or that belong to prominent members of cities or communes. It'd be neat if you could station one or more guards inside that manse, in the fulcrux. The manse owner would have to have a command that allows the city or commune to set guards in there, and the city or commune would have a command to station guards inside to guard the fulcrux.

Thoughts?

I like this. I'd have to pay Celest something to let me nab a few guards. halo.gif

The way I understand that guards/totems/some powers/org conglut/weevils/rats work is they all depend on a flag saying "This spot is Magnagora's" With the recent changes to the ethereal plane the communes tried suggesting breaking up all of those different things from each other and were told that wasn't going to happen. Well I'm pretty happy with the results anyway, but what I'm saying is I don't think that your proposed change would be very easy.

Also are the nations really going to want to spend gold plus constant power just for a few manses to be protected? I doubt it. (Even a group of 10 can be taken down if they're alone, and that's already 250 per manse per weave)

…and if said manse turns into a ship? ramming would be even less useful. (not that I've seen any ship battles anyway)

You have manse privs. Don't need guards.

Manse privs don't block enemies entirely; enemies can follow someone in still, which is pretty lame.

I think it would be nice to have liveforest/flux/ripple equivalents for manses, I don't think guards make sense.

But seriously, how many times has this been raised? tongue.gif

What I would like is a way to attack raiding ships docked at non-Basin locations, by perhaps destroying the dock temporarily, which casts the tethered ships adrift into aetherspace, making them rammable and therefore boardable. biggrin.gif

I swear to god, I thought I explained this to you people. Permissions are useless, and don't work. Don't make me make another thread on it!

They're not always useless, they're useless if you choose to open a manse to the public.

They're useless if you choose to open a manse to anyone but yourself, thankyouverymuch.
Reiha2006-08-27 06:00:56
Nice idea, but I wish statues could be enchanted to attack people, seeing as I have relatives who don't always bring in welcome guests into the manse. I would just need an excuse for the city to let me have guards in my manse...

Couldn't manse privs be made to stop those without them from following in, much like enemies can't be led into enemy territory by non-enemies?
Richter2006-08-27 06:55:36
I suggested that ages ago.
Reiha2006-08-27 06:57:06
If you're following, you can go right on into enemy territory, you just usually run into guards.

Now, if you were not allowed in and followed someone, it would nifty if your innards would explode and would be thrown into aetherspace.
Soll2006-08-27 07:05:24
If you're following someone and they walk into territory you're enemied to, you stop following.

See, I want it to work like that!

But when I asked someone about coding, he said it might take a rewrite of some of the movement code, and it might actually be more complicated than I thought. Given the fact that everyone speaks highly of his coding skills, I'll go ahead and believe him.
