Has/does anyone here ever play the game diplomacy? I play from time to time, and I love the game. Now, there are tons of varients of diplomacy out there, and after seeing the souless game, I wondered "Why not a lusternian varient?" Or at least some sort of war like game. I seek to fix this problem now, with some sort of risk or diplomacy like game. Personally, I would prefer diplomacy style, and would be willing to moderate.
For those who don't know, diplomacy is like risk on crack. Every turn, each player submits orders for each of their peices to do one move, the orders are executed at the same time. Each attack only succedes if the destination is empty, or the attacker has more "support" from other units then the defender/all other attackers to the same place. While it seems complicated at first, the system makes sense in the long run, and most importantly makes for a game without hard coded luck - the only luck is that your allie will do what you want (You can offer "support" to your allies attacks as well).
I went ahead and made a map of the basin and the planes for use in one such game. If anyone is interested/has an idea for how the game should work, or anything to say at all, please do? If not enough people are interested in playing, I won't persue this, but I think this could be very interesting.

I like the idea, I don't like the maps.
There should be a nice way to combine these two maps... keep the same number of territories etc.

Yes, the maps do look crappy. My only concern with them is how they split up the basin/planes into different areas, and how those areas connect. I'd prolly make prettier maps if this ever happens.
Shorlen2006-08-29 21:21:02
Keep it in the Basin. No need to go outside of it for the varient.
When one of my friends wants to play, they always ask if anyone wants to place a nice, friendly game of Diplomacy, and we all laugh. My friend who tends to get people together to play when he stops by gaming night makes the players all swear an oath that everything they say during the game will be a lie, and that they will not have any hard feelings about what happens during the game.

Ok Diplomacy has 19 ocean spots and about 57 territories, and 7 teams.
Lusternia has 7 teams as well, Gaudiach, Halifax, Magnagora, Celest, Ackelberry, Glomdoring and Serenwilde.
If you emphasize the islands within the oceans of the basin, you pretty much have the same map. I would ignore the outer planes.

Here is my bad diplomacy/lusternia map.. its not labeled because I don't like the way paint does text. Pink squares are "major cities", light blue is ocean, brown is land, grey is impassable.
There are quite a few problems with the map. I don't think I have enough territories, and Halifax and Magnagora certainly don't have enough "major cities" but I didn't want opposite teams to be next door to eachother. Also, I think the celest area can use some work. I also have a -bizzare- situation, where Guidiach is the more seagoing nation instead of Celest, which would need to be fixed.

Diamondais2006-08-30 05:10:17
What is this game about? Ive never heard of it before..
Daganev2006-08-30 05:51:19
Here is what I have so far, I need some more names for various water places, and I need names for more areas in the North and near Ankrag, any ideas?
Ofcourse I still need to draw the borders, I have my first attempt but I don't like it much, and I'm still missing names.
But here is a rough idea of waht it might look like
What is this game about? Ive never heard of it before..
Basically each turn you try to make alliances with people and use your armies and other peopele's armies to slowly take over all the "important places" (indicated by the dots, I forget the official name for them)
Here is a website with the rules and strategy and links etc.

Thanks Daganev, Ill take a look.

*THE* diplomacy website is here: www.diplom.org
Dag, that map looks really good. The borders need a bit of tweaking, I'll give it a shot as well... It might be worth it to include roads as areas, so we can have at least some buffer between power sources/ supply centers?

Don't forget that there's also the Igasho Village above Ankrag, and the Lucidian research facility over there too. And one of the blank Inner Sea spots can be Carai Caroo. And then there's the Presidio of the Damned and Shallamurine Cathedral to the north. And the Nagaradja caves can be an area in the southern mountains east of Southgard.

Just thought of some more ocean spots:
Celest Harbor
Magnagoran Harbor
When I get back to that computer I'll take a shot again at the borders.
Also, the fun part is comming up with 3 letter names for everything that don't conflict And then the real fun part will be us trying to find them!

Ok, here is my Ocean map.
I'm seperating my map into sections in PHotoshop so its easier to edit areas that people think are bad.
Ofcourse right after I post I see a mistake.
Tidal flats and N. Inner Sea are going to be switched. (and I need to extend a few blue lines)

FYI, as per the wiki, I'm going for 19 ocean regions(completed), 56 land regions, 34 supply centers, and 12 neutral supply centers(10 villages plus 2 islands) - so I've deleted South bay as a playable region.
Taika2006-08-30 18:43:12
Just for the sake of trolling the thread, the sea map looks spectacular. I wouldn't worry tooooo much about having the exact same ammount of regions; the idea of being a varient is that it is... well, varied. A few more/regions doesn't hurt.
It works out rather nicely as is, though... I'm gunna take a crack at the land regions, the water works out nicely - except for the fact that all the bodies of water are seperated. That will need to be addressed in the rules (In real diplolmacy, fleets can only go in water and on coastlines, and armies cant go in water - so there would be no way for, say, Gaudiguch to reach the outer basin ocean).
