I have some questions:

1)How do we treat the two halves of Balach?
2)Can I you move a fleet from the Sea of Despair to the Kelpie Shoals and vice-versa?
3)On provinces with two coasts (Great Pass and Blasted Lands) Can I have a fleet /army on each side of it?
4)What dates are we using?
5)How can we do negotiations if we don't know who is who?
6)What do we do with units go before the retreat/disband phase?
7)If I have my home 3 power centers, and I have conquered another, the rulebook says I need as many units as power centres, but you can only build units on your home turf. Can someone explain what I missed?
8)If I order a unit to support, do I have to renew that order every turn?
9)Are we gonna be lazy and use abbreviations, or just write the full name out?
10)Finally, can anyone give me advice on how to mark/write everything that happens down?

Thanks.

EDITEDITEDIT:
Crap. Crapcrapcrapcrapcrap.
I just remembered I'm going to visit my Grandad in Oxford this evening, and will be gone till Sunday morning. Count me out ranting.gif ranting.gif ranting.gif ranting.gif ranting.gif

Diplomacy usually takes weeks or months to finish online games as you take one turn every few days, even if you upped it to one turn a day it would still take a while. So you should still be able to do it. And Yey for Oxford.

But anyway

1. Same as Constantinople in normal Diplomacy would be my guess.
2. See 1. (i.e. yes)
3. Yes as per normal diplomacy rules.
4. Doesn't really matter can just be turn 1, 2, 3 etc and on even turns you have the unit build/loss phase.
5. I think we will know who is who once all the players are in place.
6. Don't understand the question.
7. This is correct, the power centres provide you the resources to build the fleet or army but you would need to build it in your starting territory. So you could have a 4th unit but you have to place it in one of your starting territories.
8. Yes orders are fresh every turn, if you don't order a unit it holds.
9. I think since we haven't gone through and written an abbreviation list then it wulll be full names, basicallys as long as its clear and unambigious what you mean it should be fine.
10. I use my copy of diplomacy normally, but since we have an alternate map, I will jsut be using GIMP and moving pieces around on a seperate layer. You could always print the map out and just use counters/coins or anything similar you have lieing around to keep track of it.

1)How do we treat the two halves of Balach?
They count as one province. You can go from Acknor to Ballach to Glomdoring, or vice versa. Its like theres a bridge connecting the two parts - you can easily cross over the bridge, or if your in the water, go under it.
2)Can I you move a fleet from the Sea of Despair to the Kelpie Shoals and vice-versa?
Yes, as per #1

3)On provinces with two coasts (Great Pass and Blasted Lands) Can I have a fleet /army on each side of it?
Nope - each province can only have one unit in it - no matter if that unit is on a coast, or is an army, or what. The coasts only matter in restricting fleet movement... It's supposed to be more realistic, but it does have its failings.
4)What dates are we using?
I really haven't thought about this... We could do the obvious 100 CoE, or make up for the fact that we have all factions and start at 500 IE (42 years before project cosmic hope should be enough).
5)How can we do negotiations if we don't know who is who?
That would either go through me, or it might make sense just to make everyones country known, and you guys can PM eachother.
6)What do we do with units go before the retreat/disband phase?
Not sure if I understand the question. You give me your orders for moves/supports/convoys and such, and then I resolve what moves where. Then you give move orders for the retreat disband phase - any units which were displaced (attacked with enough support to dislodge them) have to retreat, or disband. I don't think I'm adressing the right question, so would you mind rephrasing?
7)If I have my home 3 power centers, and I have conquered another, the rulebook says I need as many units as power centres, but you can only build units on your home turf. Can someone explain what I missed?
Ok! Builds! So, each turn is either spring or fall. In a spring turn, you just move your guys about, and thats that. On fall, however, you change control of power centers - if any of your guys are on power centers, you gain control of them, even if someone else owned them. If you had control of a supply center last fall and no one is currently on it (NOTE - CURRENTLY ON IT. That means if you move to a supply center in spring, then move past it for fall, that you DONT get control of it), you keep control of it. Now that the fall turn is over, you add up your supply centers to get how many units you should have. If you have more units than supply centers, you must "pop" (disband) units until they match up. If you have more supply centers than units, then in any of your home supply centers (only the ones you start on) that you control/are empty, you may build units. That means that even if you conquer four or more supply centers one year, you can only build three units. Alternatively, I play where you don't need to build units if you don't want to, although most of the time you would want to.

To sum up - you get a supply center in the fall, then you can build at an empy home supply center. If someone else conquers a home power center, however, you can't build there until you retake it. That means its important to defend your home, above other centers.

8)If I order a unit to support, do I have to renew that order every turn?
Yes. Orders only last for one turn
9)Are we gonna be lazy and use abbreviations, or just write the full name out?
You can abreviate, but if you do, make sure I understand it smile.gif
10)Finally, can anyone give me advice on how to mark/write everything that happens down?
Misread it. Bah.

I hope that helps.

Diplomacy is a somewhat slow paced game. You guys need time to get in touch with eachother, especially at the begining. I wasn't thinking of having the first turn happen for a weekish - do you still want to play? I might not have internet access from midday tommoro till sunday/monday night as well, because of the holiday, so yeah...

Ok, thanks loads smile.gif
6 was meant to be "What do we do with dislodged units before the retreat/disband phase." I think I changed my mind on how to word it half way through, and then forgot to change the rest. Accursed be ye, need for sleep. dry.gif

Off topic for a moment: Blaidd is Welsh for wolf, right?
Unknown2006-09-01 15:13:39
Yndi

And ignore my answer about the coasts, I misunderstood your question. Taika is right.

No offence, Alyssandra, but I think I am gonna go with what Taika said where it conflicts with your explanation, seeing as she is the GM. (I keep thinking Guildmaster whenever I type that >.<)

A week seems ok for negotiations. Seeing as half of us are in different timezones and have different schedules, everything would be wacko.gif if we tried to do it day-by-day. Thanks, everybody!

You do nothing with them...The retreat phase comes right after you find out that they are dislodged, so theres not too much happening between then.

And I have no idea sad.gif.

it is, but its not grammtically correct so I changed it. Yndi is correct. My Welsh grammar is rusty as hell tongue.gif

And I think the only thing we disagreed about was the coasts, and that was me misreading the question.

Yay, so exciting.

Is there any reason for taking over a supply center during the fall?
Diamondais2006-09-01 16:54:58
I know I said Id play but I think Im going to pull out and just watch if its possible, easier to understand if I see it once. If theres another game sometime Ill play.

Well, as long as you have a unit on it by the end of fall, then you gain control of it. If you have a unit on it by the end of spring it can be easier to keep it there than to get one on during fall, though... It all depends on the situation.

I think we should definitely know who is who, and I think it would be fun to have a thread open during gameplay, for random chatter between everyone at once.

I mean, we don't get mad at eachother over Mafia, so i'm pretty sure we can handle the backstabbing done in Diplomacy without taking it personally.
Taika2006-09-01 19:27:31
That works with me.

Come on guys, just one more! I know *someone* wants to play...
Daganev2006-09-01 20:40:42
Someoen get Shiri, or visaeris, or Verithrax, or make Daimondis play. :beg:

Just by looking at the maps and the idea of playing wants me to participate. However, I've never played Diplomacy, only Risk, so I'll have to read the rules and whatnot. If there's another game in the future I might take a crack at it.
Daganev2006-09-01 21:08:21
Play now!!!... don't wait for games in the future!

I'v only played twice before.

And I keep asking questions on the rules.
Shyshaeia2006-09-01 21:12:26
Looks like I will be in then, I have only played risk myself but I think I can learn to play.

Woot! Don't forget to PM taika.

WE should start a new thread where results are posts and random chatter can happen.

Think it was mentioned that it might be done.
