That PORTALS idea is a good one, as well as having the guild channel a different color. I just changed all of my color configurations myself. biggrin.gif
Tsuki2006-09-03 23:09:41
I like the idea of having the default GNT color being something more noticeable. It's been awhile since I had a newbie, but if there are notifications to read certain things ... definitely giving them a bit of time to read them before announcing that they're around might help, if such a delay is possible. Information overload is bad, but there undoubtedly is a lot of information to absorb to start (even if some is, or should be, common sense and other bits are things not everyone will need to be told).

Having them use PORTALS right away might give true newbies a bit more confidence to explore, though if they're prompted to do that I'd also recommend some note that they're only unlimited up to a certain level.

QUOTE(tachyon @ Sep 3 2006, 06:18 AM) 327258

so again, if the admins really want to have retention of newbies a critical KPI - offer sticks and carrots.

How about adding a category to TOPGUILDS of retention rate - defined as the number of newbies (defined as characters in the first 2 hours of play time) who go on to log 24 hours in your guild divided by total number of newbies (same definition) who enlist in your guild. You could leave this as a running total or reset it every month or something.

Give the top 2 guilds in retention rate a 10% and 5% bonus on credits they receive from player purchases, give the bottom guild a 10% penalty. It won't make vast amounts of difference to the number of credits going to guilds, but who will want to be last?

Yes its possible that some individuals will try creating lots of alts to lower some other guild's retention rate - but making that a shrubbing offense and screeening IP's of newbies who drop out would fix that. You could simply make it straight completion rate (24 hrs of logged time) but that would be a bit unfair on the guilds that don't attract as many novices for some reason (like all the glom ones that eternally sit at the bottom of TOPGUILDS).

as i'm sure someone will misinterpret what i just posted, i mean the credits a guild receives from player purchases, not what individual players get, and a 10% bonus on the 5%, meaning 5.5%, not 15%.

While an interesting idea, I don't really think this would help. The bonus, maybe, but the penalty would hurt the guilds that are likely already hurting and frustrated over a large influx of novices to teach, spending time teaching them, and seeing few return.

Granted, Moondancers is the only guild I've been in a position to keep tabs that I can use as an example, and when I kept a more close eye on specifics was awhile ago (back when I was the novice secretary). But we could average 5-6 new novices a day, estimate 35-42 a week ... and a week or two later maybe an average of 5 of those would turn out to still be around/active. For awhile there I was also trying to keep a database file of names (yay for playing with MS Access) of recent and incoming novices, for knowing who to look for to contact about giving them our pregraduation talk. I had somewhere around 300 names at the end, and overall less than half had shown significant time spent (hurray for checking the guild status of too many people tongue.gif). Probably only around 50 had gotten down under 10hrs left of their novicehood during that time, much less fully graduated.

Not too sure what other guilds do with their credits, but Moondancers make the bulk of them available by sale to guild members, to help them improve themselves in the idea that by doing so they'll be better off and more likely to stay around. A few have been prizes in quizzes or contests ... again, to help guild members improve and be happy so they're more likely to stay around. If the guild would have a credits-gained-penalty because it presumably wasn't encouraging people to stay around more, it would be a bit less able to do something to encourage people to stay.

Also remember that something intelligent potential new players might do is make novices in a few guilds to get a "feel" for the organization before firmly deciding which fits their interests best. Intelligent potential new players are a benefit to the entire community, and shouldn't be a penalty to the guild(s) they didn't like the best (something that could easily not be the guild's fault or something the guild should change).

And other sorts of players just make on character, stick with them and join the guilds one by one with that character. <.<

Which, if you want the character to do that, that's perfectly fine. Some people don't mind jumping around, or even plan on it. Others would like to be certain where they're going with their character and why, and won't have reason to want to change. If a person is of the latter sort, then it's most intelligent (and will lead to happier players of that type) if they test things out first ... the proverbial looking before leaping.

Update on the newbie tour, I think:

-
Lachesis says, "Yes, this is Shallamar, created in ancient times after the
Taint. What is the Taint?"
-
Lachesis shudders violently.

Lachesis says, "The Taint was spread by the last emperor of the Celestine

She doesn't say what the Taint is, just shudders and says that its a matter for another time, I think.

Ooh, nice addition. I remember one of my first newbie questions was "What is the taint?"

I got biased answers of course like "really disgusting stuff" and "the Engine of Transformation."

Thats okay, the only time the Ur'Guard get credit sales are when I buy credits to pay people I owe anyway, so we wouldn't feel the loss that badly.

We do feel the loss when it comes to new blood in the guild though - but getting some sort of new novice program up and running that is actually newbie friendly and has people who care about the job is the part we are having trouble with.

At least as far as I know, the newbie program in the Serenguard seems to be working. But it didn't always. People had triggers set up that as soon as they came through the Portal, they were bombarded by 3 paragraphs of instructions. Many were so overwhelmled they just left and never came back. It's taken about 6 RL months, but we slowly tweaked what we said and when we said it so that we at least get a lot of novices trained.

You have to start somewhere. Change one thing. Then, when that seems to work, change another. Gradually, what doesn't work will be replaced by what does.

Please listen. This is some of the best problem-solving advice in the world.

When things are going wrong, change a variable. Even if you guess wrong on what to change, you'll learn something if you're paying attention.

The alternative is to stand back and watch the ship sink, but it seems the world is full of Titanic enthusiasts.

About 85% of the log is stuff related to Newbies:
The standard, X Stepped out of the Portal of Fate as a Citizen
and
The standard, X blocked Y from acces to the Nexus.

Just take one look at all the newbs, and how fast some of them are coming out. Two of the Newbies, Ghorn and Cassaedi, I volunteered to knock of their basic first training that the Aquamancers recomend. And I did.
I told them the syntaxes for learning, and gaining skills, and after the learning, I told them to go kill stuff in Newton. I didn't sit down with them for 45 minutes-1 hour quoting Celestian and Aquamancer dogma to them. I just told them how to get to Newton, how to start BLASTing stuff, and off they went.
Now some of those are just stupid. "Snakeling"? Heck, he didn't even change his name. He must of just left right after finishing the tutorial, if he did that. It's rather ridiculus to sit down with all the newbies when they are coming in by the twos and threes in one bloody day...

I look at it this way. If I'm online when a Newbie Aquamancer joins, I say Hi to them in the GNT, and if noone gives the proper GHELP stuff, I'll put it on for them. If they are willing to find things out, I do so. But if they don't do crap, then...

But I agree though. Don't quote the Dogma of your city/commune and guild till at least level 21 and they are out of Newton. Let them bash stuff for awhile, before boring them.
Unknown2006-09-09 01:32:42
As a complete newbie to the game, I can say in all honesty it's a heck of a lot of information to take in at once. I've been playing another RPG for about 8 years and the server crashed. I tried Achaea for about 10 minutes, but after reading the forums I read there was more of an RP environment here.

The intro here isn't bad. An explanation, however brief, about the Taint would be nice. I do understand that there are so many things to be done in this game it's impossible to learn everything at once. So reading the forums (you guys write A LOT!), reading the histories on the website and the scrolls in game have helped immensely.

I don't know if it was luck or what, but upon leaving the Portal of Fate I was met by a very helpful bunch of guildmates. I've learned a lot by trial and error and of course I'm still learning. But the game gets more interesting everyday, even if I'm still utterly baffled by planar travel and all the afflictions, influencing and some of the language. By language I just mean things you guys can talk about and it makes perfect sense (arties, supernals, etc...).

This is longer than I had planned but for every Snakeling (or whatever his name was) there's a newb like me that actually wants to learn but just needs some time to get used to everything.

This is incredibly annoying for everyone involved, yourself included as you've probably noticed, so I suggest you get hold of some myrtle and/or faeleaf fast. You can keep it in your rift (if you have that skill, not sure if whatever guild you're in teaches you it; try AB PLANAR RIFT) and eat it whenever you become deaf. biggrin.gif
