From the Courier-Mail (Brisbane)....

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said.

It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

It is understood Mr Irwin was killed around midday, Eastern Australian time.

It is understood he was killed instantly.

A source said Mr Irwin was already dead when his body was brought onto the Isle.

A source said Mr Irwin's body was being airlifted to Cairns Hospital in North Queensland for formal identification.

Everyone knew it would happen. I'm pretty sure there was even a betting pool on what animal would end up killing him. I bet no one put money on the sting ray, heh.

Gah... of all the animal people to go, the only one I actually respected for his ability to handle the animals, and not torture them...

It is a sad day... he was a big help in several Primate reintroduction programs and zoos... sad day.

Oh, god. That's just horrible. His family must be devastated. I only watched his show a couple of times, but I thought it was really cool with his quirky personality and everything. So sad to see him go bye.gif depressed.gif

I hate how In america they showed the footage of him bringing his baby to the crocodile while talking about his death.. they could have chosen better foootage. No need to make the man look like an ass so soon after his death.

If I remember correctly, that footage was rather manipulated to make it appear far more dangerous than it actually was.
