The fact that he portrayed a country as a bunch of loud and annoying people is pretty embaressing in my opinion. We both made a distinction between the good work he did and his annoying nature, however, and commented that he did a lot of useful things.
How did he portray a country as a bunch of loud and annoying people? Beause he was loud and vibrant? He didn't say "This is Australia!" And its stupid to say he was portraying your country as anything. That's like saying America should be embarassed about the multitude of comedy shows that are produced here, because hey, they're portraying Americans as this! No. Its called comedy. We laugh. Steve Irwin was a conservationist with a peronsality that lent itself well to drawingin a wide audience. WTF is wrong with that? He wasn't trying to be Australia's poster boy, and I don't know anyone who thought that the was a representation off the average Australian.

Princess Di did a lot more than just run a few charities. Even if that were only the case, that's nothing to scoff at. Steve Irwin was positive insofar as he promoted conservation, I don't see much else positive about him.
Like? Please tell me what she did. And Steve Irwin accomplished things that most of the world doesn't care about. Very few people care about endangered species and animals, where as there are thousands of charities trying to save starving children, or whatever. I'm not saying he's a Saint, I simply disagree that Di wass anything special, and to say that "its not like Princess Diana died" is silly, because she got way too much publicity for doing nothing.
QUOTE
Humans are animals, however, we all seem to forget that we really aren't that far up the ladder in the grand scheme of things. Crocs, snails, birds, etc, all do many things better than humans can ever hope to do them.
Then a croc drives up to my house and delivers a pizza, or fixes my internet connection, then we'll talk. Until then, trying to say "Would you like to be wrestled!!?" is moronic. Compare animals to mentally retarded people, sure. And guess what? The ones who are potentially dangerous (even only when provoked) are moved to special hospitals. And I bet if they had the capability of a croc to kill, they'd get wrestled too.
QUOTE
Your link between eating to live being the same as harrasing animals is pretty weak, I hope you realise that. There's no need to jump out of a moving jeep and pick up a snake, jut because you can, for example.
Yes, because you know, human beings only ever eat to live. That's why so much of the world's population is obese. Don't kid yourself. Especially when living off of fastfood alone will kill you in about 2 months.Yeah. Eating to live. Right.
And wtf? What is so bad about him picking up a snake? Its a frack'n snake. Its not going to be traumatized or anything. And if him jumping out of a jeep and picking up a snake makes even 1 person, who previously thought snakes were totally icky and needed to be exterminated, think differently, then I'd say its worth it. And with a television show like his, I can assure you more than one person had their opinion shaped in a positive way by him.
QUOTE
And yes, I do oppose bullriding/spearing for sport, horse racing, etc.
So you opposed most pre-tractor farming methods too? And everyone who ever rode a horse for any purpose? And hell, I bet even where you live displaced more animals than Steve Irwin "irritated". So, when you get a tent and go live in the woods, then you can talk. Until then, you're just a massive hypocrite.
QUOTE
I've said all of these things before he died. Just because he's gone now doesn't mean I should suddenly change my opinion.
I'm not suggesting you should because of that. It just so happens that what you were saying before he died was silly and ignorant. That's all.

Actually, the consensus among people who knew Irwin in real life (IE, not through television) seems to be that he was really like that, rather than some national stereotype for the cameras. You can't say he was 'portraying' your country if that's how he actually was.
