How do you not make a profit in alchemy? I told Xenthos, my favorite herbalist, what I charge, and he made me feel bad for price gouging, even though everyone happily paid those rates. I dropped my prices and I still make around 40% profit on everything.

The problem is the quantity of herbs necessary and finding an herbalist with a good stock of the herbs so you can always do an order. It can take a bit of effort.

I don't feel bad telling people no, or telling people with more than one keg, or an unusual keg, to provide most of the herbs themselves. Still...

180 is my lowest health price (dropped twice from 225, which people happily paid until you poked me)
-20 (powerstone)
-----
160 / 12 (number of herbs) = 13.33

You know your actual herb prices better than I do, but isn't it...galingale 8, sargassum 8, juniper 7, yarrow 7? That's 63% profit, even figuring in powerstone costs.

8 8 7 8.
95 gold for the herbs for one health potion.

I found alchemy to be a tedious skillset UNLESS you have a herbalist, an active herbalist, to constantly supply you. At points when I did, it was a great skillset. At points when I did not, it was irritating like nothing else.

Overall, I've given up on the notion of using my tradeskill to make gold. I've been an alchemist, herbalist, jeweler, tailor, cook, and enchanter. There is nothing available that can beat gorgogs/catacombs/hammerheads/tosha. I can easily make 50k gold a month PLUS experience/karma.

================================================

Of course, there is something to note about enchanters. You can make some -easy- gold disenchanting. With a Hunter friend, you can even unite into any guildhall and disenchant like mad. Each monolith is 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 iron, 1 platinum, which adds up fast.

Oh, I have a question about Kegs in Alchemy. Can any alchemist fill a keg or do you need a skill?
Can you only do it by 10 potions at a time or full 100?

Asking because I had a complication where I lost what was equal to 90% of the herbs needed to fill 100 vials on one keg on Dia with Allia (master Alchemy) filled the keg.

As per HELP ALCHEMY, you can only mix up to ten potions at once.

Any alchemist can fill a keg. Even if a trans alchemist fills it, you'll only get 50 sips per fill.
Narsrim2006-09-13 03:59:43
Anyone can fill a keg. You add to it 1 potion at a time.

You're right. Hunting earns more gold than the trade skills per time put in.

I find harvesting somewhat relaxing, though, and a decent break from other things. It also gives me time to tweak my system when I really need to.

This mindset does sometimes make me the target of the word "insane," however.
Diamondais2006-09-13 04:00:43
Good to know, I will never make that ungodly-expensive-for-me-big-time mistake again.

We harvest for much the same reasons then.

Herbs is the best for pure profit. Alchemy has the best effort:profit ratio (in other words, it's the best if you can't spend hours harvesting), from what I've seen - some shopowners pay very well for keg refills, especially city shopowners, especially city shopowners who are having difficulty acquiring kegs due to enemy status or the like. Wink, wink.
Ekard2006-09-13 10:09:48
Herbs is like that: harvest, harvest and more harvest, wait for someone who want to buy in bulk, sell to him.
When i was herbalist i have some deals for like 70-100k at once.
And just few days ago i haev bough herbs from one herbalist for 130k.
Patience is a key, you may dont sell anything for week but then sell everything in few minutes.

As for Alchemy there is a few ways of earning gold.
Like having friendly herbslit wiht constant herbs for sale. Or looking from tiem to time for bulk purhase.
Or just try to find a shop owner like me who will pay 5k for keg and will needed herbs. So for few minutes of work you can get thousands of gold.

Tailoring, not sure im trans tailor but i just wanted Splendor, im not sewing any clothes so far.

Other skills im not sure.

Ahh forging is sweet gold too.

And Gloves are nice but not nessesary. But if you will get them you will love them for sure.
Sylphas2006-09-13 12:08:12
My Gloves have already paid for themselves simply from the fact that I just traded in my other arties that I already had, so there was no extra outlay for them.
Diamondais2006-09-13 14:30:42
Thanks for your help, if I take up Alchemy Ill look into getting unenemied to Celest. If I take up herbs, meh, something to do to take my mind of things and earn some profit later on. Also, to play with my skills I usually ignore. smile.gif
Sylphas2006-09-13 15:04:15
Isn't it annoying that two of our skills in Nature are pretty worthless if you're not an herbalist? We should replace some things in Cosmic and Elementalism with a skill that makes enchanting slightly faster or something.
Unknown2006-09-13 15:41:27
If you have the right conections, you could sell lots with Alchemy

Sell Health and Mana vials to all of the guild shops in a city. Add more Bromides to the Mage guild shops, add more Health to the Warrior guilds. Add lots of fire to the Magnagoran shops. From Health, Mana, Bromides and Fire in Magnagora, you could make some good money.

I remember when I just used 2 fire vials in a day. I spend like 5 health vials now in a day as a Wicca. My tome helps, tho.

Heh, need to get unenemied for Celest sales.

Corinthian, please, half it. The colours still hurt enough to annoy people. Stop making it hard to read your long posts! angry.gif
