It always amuses me that people automatically assume that if a couple have children in-game, they obviously procreated and gave birth to said children. I mean, honestly? How many times do people think you can 'forget' a child for so long, or RP a child that long.
Has anyone really THOUGHT about the considering process? It's for parents and child to decide if they want to be family. Since when did procreated children who KNOW their parents ever have a choice?

It's up to them. If they want to have given birth to the child and forgot, good for them. If not, that's fine too. You hit on the only real complaint, people assuming things, on the first sentence, but the rest seems to be a complaint about the RP behind considering that's ot adoption, which is silly.
Xenthos2006-09-15 18:59:03
My only issue is people who say that so-and-so is their true child when they're different races and can't really procreate, much less make a THIRD race.
But if the kids are adopted (which the consideration process generally is, adoption), then there's no problem.

Heh, I can see it now.
CONSIDER CHILD - The Next person to walk through the portal of fate and is in your city/commune is now your child. Have fun!!

That's the great thing about viscanti. You can interbreed with anyone, and as long as the children are also viscanti, you're good to go.

I had that problem cause Gwynevere thought all my children were by birth when in fact, Id roleplayed adopted Vae and Azreal. Allia was my only child. She had decided those she was adopting were to just wear the name and not be considered. Her choice.
Everiine2006-09-15 19:37:56
I looked at it this way: we know that the Portal of Fate changes many things about a person, even their appearance and race. You could have a child, and when they go through the Portal, they could come out looking completely different. And since they remember little of their childhood, they may not know for certain who their parents were, and the parents wouldn't recognize the child at first. The consideration process is like going over it all, making sure that it is the child they indeed gave birth too.
Karnagan2006-09-15 19:41:44
The Portal makes everyone forget a substantial amount of their past, is all. Therefore, both parent and child need a long consideration period. It's not like real life where memory is more solid: everyone's at least a little amnesiac here.

This is actually covered in the very first paragraph of the HELP FAMILY scroll: what Everiine has mentioned is almost exactly what is stated therein.

Isn't the whole premise of the Portal of Fate that it makes those who pass through it forget their lives - it also, mentions that your passing through the Portal of Fate has skewed reality. Maybe, before you passed through the Portal of fate, the whole family knew everyone in it, but once someone passed through it messed up reality and you don't remember them and they don't remember you and so on.
That's what I love about the whole Portal of Fate concept. You don't have to go in knowing your 'life story' cause you're supposed to not know it and discover it along the way.
Shamarah2006-09-15 20:51:24
I think what Kiarlea is saying that it's ridiculous for the parents to totally "forget" that they had a child at all.
Which is quite true.
Which is quite true.
Unknown2006-09-15 20:56:41
Its not ridiculous if you take the stance that 'memories' are the interweaving of our threads with others. When someone passes through the Portal of Fate, their thread is essentially unwoven from all its past counterparts and begins fresh. However, by that same token, just as they forget about us, we forget about them, because our threads are no longer interwoven.
Kiarlea2006-09-15 21:12:35
It's just irritating that some forget so massively, with no threads ever to be interwoven with the past, yet others come through and claim to know all.
I also mainly posted this because I was annoyed because everyone looks at Kiarlea and Klia and goes, WHOA, HOW DID AN IGASHO AND A FAELING HAVE CHILDREN? HOW DOES YOUR MARRIAGE WORK, zomg, I r nub, dont no wot im syain.
Sorry, I just get tired of the same old boring reaction, over and over.
Long story short. One. Don't assume. Two. DON'T ASSUME. And three. Those who assume are 'tards. End of story.

Except... its completely unrealistic that a relationship would have no sex involved and leave both parties satisfied with life.
So, if your characters don't have sex.. how are they not frustrated beyond all belief? I'm not saying actually playing it out, but it should still be a "while the players are logged out.." sort of thing.
While the "how do an Igasho and faeling have a child" might be a silly question.. "how does your marriage work?" isn't necessarily so unreasonable.
Of course, that's when Rp stops and people go "Psh. My char is forever celebate!" and the husband goes "That's fine with me!"
Yeah.. right.

There is some interbreeding between races; its made pretty clear that Humans, at least, can and have interbred with most of the other races. Failing that, you can always just blame Magic.

Only humans and Viscanti can interbreed.

I imagine if a human character chose to get married to a talking donkey, there'd be the same reaction.
Cross-species breeding is something that is likely to always involve some measure of outrage and scandal, and all you have to do is incorporate it into your RP. Just because some show a certain RP reaction to your character's actions doesn't make them "nubs" or ignorant. Just like in real life, the first assumption you -should- make upon learning someone's parents is that they are probably biologically linked.
Speaking more generally, I actually really don't like the effect of the Portal of Fate on Lusternia. I find the fact characters step out with no background, no motivations, and yet fully fledged members of a certain race/class/nation means that there is a discontinuity in trying to establish any sense of tradition or ancestry. While it might give potential for developing a fresh story from that point on, it is a significant hindrance to imagining any history or sense of community/belonging that is not established AFTER one chooses a path in life. Just a pet dislike.
Edit: On second thought, the PoF is alright in theory, but in practice I don't think what is actually happening is explained enough. When I first went through, I thought I was entering a new time/new reality. Not what it is in reality - the equivalent of jogging up the mountain, dropping some LSD to see if I survive, and trying to get some meaning from a few psychedelic visions.

And I'm a "half" changeling, I've been Human, Trill, Merian, Mugwump and Elf!
