Poked around a bit, and it's based on a graphic novel written by the same guy who wrote "Sin City". That explains the similar look and feel.

Sounds like a cool movie, very trippy, the movie continues but 2 out of every 10 seconds it flashes to some guy in an outfit yelling spartans
