Estarra says they've been thinking of adding another power to this underpowered artifact, but are swamped and haven't had time to think about it. So, here's a thought:
Sheep Shearing: places 1 cloth directly into a tailor's inventory for each sheep used to complete a commodity quest, in addition to all the usual effects of the quest.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense really, to me anyway. Making cloth from wool is a pretty involved process, so the idea of getting cloth when you shear a sheep just sounds fishy.
Now... if I remember what I've read, you can use them now to get some commodities back when you cut up clothing right? Well, why not have the additional power be like the one the paintbrush has or is it the spatula?
You know... if you make clothing while weilding the shears, you won't use as many commodities cause you were able to be more precise in how much you used or something. So if an article of clothing says it needs 10 cloth, you might only have to use 8, leaving the other 2 in your hands after you make the clothing item.

It ought to return a greater number of commodities. And instead of it giving you cloth for delivering sheep, have it usable on cow or sheep corpses to create a leather or a cloth, respectively, or even on spiders to create a silk. It is magic, after all.
Acrune2006-10-07 02:57:55
Not thinking the idea of making your own comms would be okayed.
Veonira2006-10-07 04:38:50
I think it'd be neat if the artifact would let you to both get some commodities back when shearing and increase the number of months your clothing/accessory lasts (similar to how arts/higher tailoring does).
Or maybe let you shear and mend for free or a greatly reduced cost or something?
Or maybe require only half a vial for proofing.

Free mending sounds good.

What he said.
This is a rare magical artifact doing magical things. The trick isn't to think in terms of realistic, but terms of what's thematic, and what will make the object worthwhile without making it hugely complicated or unbalancing.
Noola2006-10-07 14:06:19
I understand it's meant to be magical, but, I dunno. It just seems a bit over the top. Not in the form of results, cause one cloth probably isn't any big deal, but raw wool turning into cloth just by being cut off the sheep by a special pair of shears seems a bit goofy. Just my opinion is all.
The free mending sounds good though.

You do realize that when you bring a sheep to a textile place, it instantly adds 1 cloth to the stock, right? Or that people can sew massively ornate robes in a matter of seconds? Come on now, saying its goofy is a bit stupid when everything is considered.

See, I explain that in that the textile perople had already made some cloth and in order to make room for more wool, they have to deliver that cloth to the comm shop and by the time I walk from the textile place to the comm shop, it's been delivered.
That makes more sense, to me, than cutting the wool off the sheep and it falling into your hands as cloth.
But like I said, this is just my opinion.

Ok on the level of realistic here, the ideas right here are awesome. Shears are a tailoring item, use them for every aspect in the real world when making clothes right? So if anything for here I would like these ideas to be thought over. Because they really do make sense.
I don't have shears, I think I quoted in rants though what happened when I barrowed Exarius's shears. I hope that the items that use alot of gems, silver, gold give back on those commodities. Tints I can understand not seeing back.
I think Jewelers when they melt things get all the comms back, or nearly all. I admit I don't know for sure. Never tried that trade.
Oh and to add to Veonira's list:
Maybe make balance happen a bit faster.
I think those who fill shops would like that one.
Veonira2006-10-08 06:36:31
I love tailoring (if you can't tell by my being trademaster a few times + my database) and wanted a tailoring artifact, but I would not buy them as is now, it's just not worth it
And yes, filling shops is longgg and reduced balance would be awesome

If mending was free, noone would ever have to buy clothes (especially greatrobes) again. They'd just get one pair of shears per org and be able to have armour for free for the rest of their lives. Mending is expensive so sometimes it's worth it just to make a new one.
EDIT: Forgot to comment on the point of the thread. Sheep shearing sounds cool.

Greatrobes can only be mended so many times before they can't be mended again, along with cloaks.
Veonira2006-10-08 17:06:35
Yes.
And I don't think an org would really spring for that. If you had shears, you could still charge the amount of a mend, then it's just pure profit for you and a nice perk for having the shears.

Sylphas2006-10-08 22:29:59
Why are forgers able to get all the metal comms back, without even needing an artifact, and then tailors get just a portion when they buy an artifact? That's like some cruel joke.
Isluna2006-10-08 23:30:35
Yeah that does make it seem unfair. I always wondered why we didn't have a skill to cut up almost decayed clothes, and was told by a few it had been asked for in the past, but was pretty much turned down.
Aiwendil2006-10-11 11:47:34
Oh, in all the time I've been a tailor, I've never mended anything to unmendable status before.

Only someone evil could have thought of that.

Hey, you have to make a profit somehow. Yes I'm bumping this so it doesn't go out of sight/out of mind .
Exarius2006-10-26 19:26:32
Just wondering if any more thought's been put into this in the middle of everything by the admins?
I'm still holding a 300 credit paperweight, and would be nice to know if that's going to change.
